Why do you need a router for you laptop?
Basically, plug the uplink on the router into the modem. If the router has a little antenna thingy and your laptop has a wireless card, you don't need the 2nd cable.

Yes, but the internet also needs to be connected to the desktop computer. Thus, I need a router.
And I got a second ethernet cable. But guess what. I suck at computers and somehow I can't get it to work.
Ok. So. I followed the step-by-step instructions from the router company's website.
1. unplug both router and external cable modem.
2. take ethernet cord, typically plugged directly into desktop computer, into router, into slot labeled WAN.
3. Take second ethernet cord and connect it from one of the four output slots on back of router and plug it into ethernet jack in computer (which the cord from step 2 normally is).
4. Plug in modem, plug in router.
5. Turn on computer. Internets ahoy!
Except it won't work. I can't get on the internet from my desktop or my laptop. I set up a wireless network and everything, used my usb drive on my laptop and the desktop. The Network Connections box tells me I;m connected to the internet, all the little lights are blinking like they're supposed to, yet when I open Firefox it doesn't load anything. Can't access page, that type of bullshit.

Try powering down and then up the router after the modem is on... Not sure if it will help, but who knows right?
Also try pinging the router... It's probably at the default address, which means you can open a command prompt, type "ipconfig", and it should give you an IP address in the 192.168.1.X range. If those things work and you still can't get access, try logging into the router by opening up http://192.168.1.1 in your browser (you may need a password). Then look at the status and see if it has an IP address or anything.

i'll attempt this tomorrow, but my brain will probably explode.
update: still won't work, but I was doing something wrong before.
Ok, so I went to the D Link website (company the router is made by), and downloaded a pdf of the instruction manual, which I didn't have before.
So yeah. I connected everything just like before. I restart the computer like they tell me to. So, when it comes back, I'm told to open the internet browser and type in http://192.186.0.1 in the box. I do. A login box pops up, just like it says. I'm told to enter "admin" into the username slot and leave the password slot blank, and it will take me to the next step. Except, it doesn't. I type in admin, pass blank, and it comes back like I entered a wrong password. I also tried "administrator", "ADMIN", and typed "admin" is the pass box as well. Nothing.
At this point, I'm positively stumped. I unplugged everything again and redid everything, exactly according to the instructions 3 different times and I'm still at the same point.

Try this:
Quote:
Step 1 - Locate the reset pinhole on the back of the unit. Step 2 - With the unit powered on, press and hold the Reset button. Step 3 - Hold the Reset button for about 10 seconds. Step 4 - Release the Reset button. Step 5 - The unit will reboot. Allow 20-to-30 seconds before reconnecting. Step 6 - The device is now reset to factory defaults.
Note: Do not recycle power during the reset procedure.

Try:
username: (blank) password: admin
or
username: root password: admin
