anyone know anything about this movie?it's richard kelly's follow up to donnie darko. the description of it at imdb just was'nt enough for me. there's also suppose to be graphic novels under the same name to be coming out to.

not really a musical.moby did the sountrack and music is in the background for something like 90% of the scenes. i just recently found the movie's website http://www.southlandtales.com and there's no info on the movie on it, just trippy music and some puzzles that so far seem to have no point to them. i'm just really curious about kelly's follow up to donnie darko, and it has a really interesting cast in it.

man this movie looks fucking TERRIBLE (so say the early reviews), but I'm gonna have to see it anyway. Trailer:

Quote:
Los Angeles, 2008: The city stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Southland Tales is an epic story set over the course of threedays that culminate in a massive 4th of July celebration. A large ensemble cast of characters includes Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson), an action star stricken with amnesia, Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.

Looks intriguing, but I haven't heard any positive reviews from people who've seen it.

I'm sure I'll check it out when it comes out on dvd. Sounds like the dude is trying very hard to be Lynch-eque and not succeeding, but curiousity will definitely get me to watch it.

I really enjoyed this movie, though I don't think I can recommend it to anyone.

I figured someone would bump this eventually. It was interesting, but ultimately collapses under it's own convuluted weight and incoherent nonsense. I could appreciate the Lynch-lite of Donnie Darko but I think this movie shows that fundamentally Kelly doesn't get it. I think this story had an actual meaning and linear pattern of events and wasn't meant to be subjective, which many are saying is the case.

And supposedly it ties in to some graphic novels and other things that if you haven't read people are saying you must in order to understand the film. I knew it would be a train wreck, but I had to see for myself and it is indeed a mess.

Is this going to have an annoying cult status in a year, where all the fans on IMDB blabber on about how everyone else doesn't "get it?"

some kelly fanboys (yeah, they exist  ) will probably still claim it's the best thing ever on these messages boards, but the film will most certainly vanish from everybody's memory soon, if it's not already the case.

Yeah, I'd agree, it will probably only be the hardcore Kelly fanboys. Those people were annoying even with Donnie Darko though.

I get the feeling that for the generation just below mine, by say maybe 3-4 years, that's some kind of watershed film to them. I'm not knocking it, I like the movie, but it seems it has some bigger importance to them or something. So a few people might cling to this one, but I doubt it's going to be a large number.
