I'm trying to set up a tournament and have people vote on the best athlete. There are 64 spaces... 32 for the big 4 sports, 32 for all other sports. I don't know much basketball or football history, so I could use some input before voting starts.

I don't honestly believe he's the best hockey player of all time...but he's in the top 8 and deserves to be in the conversation. Certainly the best goalie of my lifetime.

If by best you mean third to Roy and Brodeur, then yes, I agree.

If by best you mean third to Roy and Brodeur, then yes, I agree.
I'll entertain the Roy argument...but Brodeur? disagree. He's great, no doubt...but he played on great teams, specifically...great defensive teams...even more specific...unwatchable teams. On the other hand, Hasek, and Roy (especially in 93) carried teams by themselves.

Jim Brown, Bo Jackson, Jim Thorpe. Just have a vote between these 3. I don't think any athlete that didn't excel in more than one sport at a college, pro, or equivalent level deserves mention. With the exception of Olympic athletes in numerous events.
As for the side argument about hockey goalies...Sawchuck owns all.

It's a nice thought, but no matter what kind of teams a player plays on, numbers count. Brodeur has unbelievable numbers. I think that by the end of his career (as long as he doesn't miss too many years) he'll hold the all time record for shutouts and be very high (if not first) in wins. Yes he played on great teams, but that doesn't make a goalie that good.
Would you say that Mark Messier doesn't deserve his 694 goals because he played with Gretzky?

Brodeur shouldn't even be in that conversation. He's been on perhaps the best defensive teams of the last 20 years. Hasek would have had 40 shutouts a year if he was in NJ.

Mark Messier deserves to be in the argument for his leadership...case in point...he won two stanley cups without Gretzky...but Gretzky has none without Messier. Is Greztky Manning and Messier Brady?
Brodeur has numbers...and I'm not putting him down...he's great...but I'll steal something I heard on a talk show today and just say...I'm not basing my opinion on numbers...but rather by what i've seen. i've watched both Brodeur and Hasek play...and going by this criteria, Hasek is by far and away the better goalie.

I love Ryan, the Rocket...etc...but this guy has GOT to be the number one pitcher on the list. I mean...511 wins? are you kidding me? The guy threw 24 and 1/3 hitless innings.
