Basically a Soviet propaganda film made during the first years of the Cuban Revolution (so obviously, it was banned in the US), Martin Scorsese saw it in the early 90s and decided to restore it. I think it was re-released again this year with a making-of documentary or something. The Soviet director had won at Cannes for a film about Russian in WWII in the 1950...this was released in 1964. Amazing, amazing cinematography and camera work. Mouth-watering black & white tones. I saw the opening rooftop scene in a film class a few years ago and subsequently forgot the name of the film.

Quote:
The movie consists of four distinct short stories about the suffering of the Cuban people and their reactions, varying from passive amazement in the first, to a guerrilla march in the last. Between the stories, a female narrator (credited "The Voice Of Cuba") says such things as, "I am Cuba, the Cuba of the casinos, but also of the people."

The first story (centred on the character Maria) shows the destitute Cuban masses contrasted with the splendor in the American-run gambling casinos and prostitution in Havana. The next story is about a farmer, Pedro, burning his sugar cane when he learns he is going to lose his land to United Fruit. The third story describes the suppression of rebellious students led by a character name Enrique at Havana University (featuring one of the longest camera shots). The final part shows how Mariano, a typical farmer, ends up joining the rebels in the Sierra Maestra Mountains, ultimately leading to triumphal march into Havana to proclaim the revolution.

Quote:
Stalker (Russian: Сталкер) is a 1979 film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. It describes the journey of three men travelling through a post-apocalyptic wilderness called the Zone to find a room with the potential to fulfill one's innermost desires.

Both of these are pretty hard to find, and I canceled my Netflix service. Might have to make a trip to the video store tonight though.

Wow those picks are from left field

I'm thinking i need a little Hitchcock in me. Need to see "North by Northwest", "Vertigo", and "Rear Window".

I need to see "The Conversation" to basically close off all the 1970s classics that I haven't seen.

If you go to a larger Hollywood Video, they might have stuff like this, actually. Ames' HV has pretty much every Kurosawa film, and tons of other stuff in "foreign" and "foreign classics" I'd never heard of.

If not that, go to Netflix and search it out. If that fails, try Ebay. If that fails, shell out at Amazon. If that fails,

Also, do want "No Country for Old Men" or however it's worded. Since I read "Golden Compass" I'd love to see that too, but I'm probably going to end up waiting for rental for this one.

There's also that mysterious, obscure film "The Navidson Record" ...

I'm dying to see The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. There Will Be Blood is high on the list as well. Great year for movies.

Have you read The Golden Compass? It honestly seems like they ruined it for the movie.

Definitely check out Pan's Labyrinth.

And don't hold your breath on Sin City 2, as far as anyone knows, it's not being made yet.

In the near future I want to see:

There Will Be Blood
Be Kind Rewind
Juno
Walk Hard
Gone Baby Gone
Diary of the Dead
