Fidel Castro said President George W. Bush appears deranged, and that Cubans would much rather live in the Caribbean island's "heaven" than try and survive in what he said was Bush's corrupt, capitalist "hell."
In comments aired live on state-run television, Castro told thousands of teachers attending an international pedagogy conference in Havana that he closely watched Bush's inauguration speech January 20 and saw "the face of a deranged person."
"If only it were just the face," he said, to roars of applause by educators in the audience hailing from 52 countries around the world.
Castro, wearing his olive green military uniform, criticized Bush's government, linking it to corruption and torture, according to the report.
He then defended Cuba's socialist system, which Bush's administration has openly said should be replaced with a democratic, free-market one.
"This country is heaven, in the spiritual sense of the word," he said. "And I say (to Bush), we prefer to die in heaven than survive in hell."
The 78-year-old Castro expressed little enthusiasm for renewed diplomatic ties between Cuba and the European Union, indicating displeasure that a decision to lift sanctions on Cuba was temporary.
European Union foreign ministers announced this week they would lift a ban on high-level governmental visits and stop inviting Cuban dissidents to embassy gatherings in Havana.
The 25-nation bloc had imposed the sanctions after Castro's government cracked down on government opponents in March 2003.
The EU's new policy, which demands the release of all imprisoned dissidents, is up for review in July.

Castro is an idiot. I have a great uncle who lived in Cuba and left right before the Communists took over. He still has relatives living there and supposedly party officials have the place on a lockdown, going through mail, pestering people, etc.

I was thinking, for both of them, if the shoe fits, wear it.

Talk about a nation yearning for freedom and democracy. Logistically it would have been easier to invade Cuba, he already has the refugee vote locked up. THINK OF THE BEACHES!

Castro will take pot shots at whoever is President.
Whoever is President will dislike and distrust whoever is leader of Cuba.
Why, oh why, we prevented ourselves from just annaxing Cuba after the Spanish/American war I'll never figure out. Fears of not being able to intergrate the society, I suppose, but it sure would mean less trouble for us.

Iif ever there was one solid case of the pot calling the kettle black....indeed! I'm right there with ya....of course, I don't think Castro has "invaded" or bombed any countries lately, has he? They're both bastards, and its our "fault" Castro got into "office" in the first place because we put him there ("Oh hey, yes, put me in charge and I will set up a democracy.... Oh thank you for putting me in charge, I think I'll be a dictator instead, here are all my criminals, I'll send them to your Florida, thank you and have a nice day." Yeah. Castro. Right. Just as credible as Bush I suppose.

On a serious note,
Nothing that comes out of Castro's mouth should be taken with any ounce of credibility. Here we have a man who led a revolution to overthrow a greedy and hostile dictator in Batista, only to become a greedy and hostile dictator himself.
It is not about communism, it is not about socialism, it is not about equality, and it is not about the people. It is about Castro being a tyrannical dictator and nothing more.
