This has civil war potential.

That's very true, and its also another excuse for the Constitution to be suspended. Tragic.

I think that's the least of Pakistan's worries in the time being. The country's whole political system will be in upheaval, and you will have many ideological factions trying to play a part (some for good, others for very, very bad).

Some reports suggesting she was shot after a bomb blast. Earlier reports seemed to suggest she was injured after the bomb blast and was not able to be saved at the hospital.

God only knows what is going through Nawaz Sharif's head right now.

Yeah that's what I'm hearing too. Sounds like an inside job to be able to get that close.

We should see martial law and the constitution suspended by day's end.

So I've been up for an hour and a half watching NBC all morning. They've talked about fashion, and some guy that's traveled all over the globe, and how evil America is for using coal fired power plants that's warming the planet a bazillion degrees...no mention of this. WTF...

I'm so saddened by this but she's survived several assassination attempts in the past; this didn't come as a surprise or a shock at all.

I'm anxiously curious as to what the full effect of this will be.

Quote:
Announcing the death of the Pakistan People's party leader outside the hospital, Bhutto's lawyer said: "the surgeons confirmed that she has been martyred".

Not murdered, martyred. It's starting already. And some are already placing the blame on Musharraf, I see. Not that I wish to imply I have even a single shred of respect for that man, but practially anyone could have been behind this.

Probably 90% of Americans don't know who Bhutto is and probably know next to nothing about Pakistan. They don't care.

Could part of that be from the Bush Admin constantly telling us that Iraq is the biggest problem in the world??

So was this Musharraf or the Taliban/al Qaeda?

Quote:
Today's attack occurred in the military garrison city of Rawalpindi, which the Pakistani military presumably controls. This was was the fifth bombing targeting military and political leaders in Rawalpindi since July.

This was the second strike against Bhutto since her return to Pakistan in mid-October. The first attack also showed a level of sophistication, training, and discipline typical of a military operation. In the October attack on Bhutto's return processional in Karachi, snipers, suicide bombers, and a car bomb were coordinated among a blanket of security. The attack came close to killing Bhutto. Over 132 Pakistanis were killed and upwards of 500 wounded.

Bhutto supporters have begun to blame President Pervez Musharraf for her death. The sophistication of the attack, the governments reported refusal to provide adequate security, as well as the location of the bombing, have created distrust among Bhutto supporters.

But....

Quote:
This attack was most likely carried out by the Taliban and al Qaeda. Baitullah Mehsud, the leader of the newly united Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan, or Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, threatened to kill Bhutto upon her return in October. The Taliban and al Qaeda manage training camps in Pakistan's tribal areas and have trainers and recruits from the Pakistani military in their ranks.

This would be somewhat ironic, given that a lot of people point to Bhutto as being largely responsible for the Taliban's growth and increased influence while she was in power.

At least it was prior to her getting elected... a power vacuum would probably be worse in this case.

The Taliban has been using Musharraf as their organizing principle in Pakistan, so if he falls to the opposition, maybe they wouldn't have a rallying cry anymore? I don't know I'm just thinking out loud.

Whats best for Pakistan right now? A strong ruler that will hold the country together and keep it from spiraling out of control? Maybe Musharraf is best for that. Maybe pushing him to democratize and open up is actually going to weaken the government beyond the point of saving it. Musharraf has walked a fine line of staying on the West's good side, while no angering the extremists enough to tip the country over the brink. Upsetting the balance in the country might be very dangerous. Maybe that's why Bhutto's death isn't that bad. This reminds me of Battlestar Galactica, where Zarek wants to democratize the government even though they're being attacked by the Cylons.

Then again, Musharraf is the target of a lot of the hostility in the country and maybe it would calm things down if he's out of there. Like I said, I'm really just thinking out loud.

Imagine holding elections with a Taliban majority.
