My dad got rubed into getting a super high-powered laptop when all he does is play solitaire. I even told him what they would try to sell him and he still took it. My only consolation is that he'll probably give it to me at some point.

I've bought four computers from Dell, and they've gotten progressivle worse. With an extreme drop off with the current XPS, and Dells absolutely fucking horrible customer service. Dell is going the way of Gateway.

I'm getting an Apple next.
Maybe this is all part of Dell's plan, to get everyone to switch over to apple.
I got a gaming laptop from Asus, and the biggest issues I've had from it are due to Vista. We'll see how long that lasts though. I do not have the luxury of getting a mac at any time in the near future as that would be a moral victory for my Mac loving girlfriend, and I just can't let her win.

Just get the parts and build it yourself or have someone you know build it for you.
The sum of the parts you get in a machine from these companies is maybe half of what you're paying.

while this is true, i dont really advocate this. with the prices you get from dell now, thats not always true now, factor in that they replace parts fairly quickly (even if you have to jump through hoops to troubleshoot it) unless youre really a computer geek, you can be getting a bit over your head.
just the price of the OS and the monitor alone is almost the same price of some of these dells
as far as upgrading, if you get a mini-desktop, yes your screwed, not a whole lotta room for anything in them

I guess if you're getting a cheap computer the difference is going to be less. If you're going for a high performance computer and spending 2000 or more it is going to be a more noticeable difference.
also recently dell was selling the msi 8800gt and took more orders than they could handle, screwing over many consumers. I don't really trust dell.
But peeps is right, you should be careful with installing computers. My girlfriend's brother got a processor that wasn't compatible with his motherboard and the whole thing went up in flames. No actual flames involved, but he did have to get a whole new set up.

i wanted a mac but the cost compared to dell really didn't make it logical for me.

Dells are great bang-for-your-buck computers. If you want an absolutely top-of-the-line computer, they're not the greatest choice, but they have some of the best values out there. You can always get a machine that will get the job done for under a grand.
And who cares about customer service. I don't know that I've ever even attempted to call customer service for anything.

They provided some non functioning integrated sound in my old desktop, so I had to go out and get a sound card, which, while cheap, was annoying. They claimed that even though it was putting out terrible 8 bit equivalent quality sound, that it was 'working'. Poor Tech support guys that can't do anything but read off of a script.

dell customer service helped me figure out a problem with my laptop. Though, I couldn't understand what the guy was saying because he was from India and I was getting pretty angry about that. At one point he took virtual control of my mouse and was going to save a program to the desktop, but said, "uhhh, I'll just save it here" after he didnt see an option for saving to the desktop and I said, "It is probably under the folders button" and he asked me to do it.

When your computer comes in the box with the OS all kinds of fucked up. Fucked up SO BAD THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN REINSTALL IT! There's a serious problem.
I really hate to admit this, but it was so bad that I actually had to say, "Get me you're white manager." I'm SO fed up with Dell.
My dad's last Dell sucked so bad he got a Mac. My sister got a Mac. My uncle just got a new Dell desktop and it's been nothing but a disaster from day one as well.
They are basically producing Wal*Mart quality computers now, with almost worse customer service. One of the best parts of Dell used to be the customer service and reliability of the computers. They dropped off on quality, which bogged down customer service. Then the new CEO made the computers even worse, and made DRASTIC cuts on customer service in order to cut prices on the computer.
Like I said, this company used to be GREAT! Just like Gateway. Gateway made amazing machines. Gateway did what Dell is doing and went completely down the shitter. For some reason Dell has adapted their model, and they are going down the shitter. Eventually people are going to wake up. Apple is going to destroy the PC industry.
