Paul Domowitch: Sources say Heckert favorite to be Falcons GM
by Paul Domowitch Philadelphia Daily News EAGLES general manager Tom Heckert still appears to be the leading candidate to get the Atlanta Falcons' GM job once owner Arthur Blank ends his wild goose chase for Southern California coach Pete Carroll.
According to two league sources, the Falcons could offer the job to Heckert as soon as this weekend. The team interviewed several other personnel executives in the last 2 weeks, including Patriots director of college scouting Tom Dimitroff, Packers pro personnel director Reggie McKenzie, Packers personnel analyst to the general manager John Schneider and Jaguars director of college scouting Gene Smith.
Chris Mara, the Giants' vice president of player evaluation, withdrew his name from consideration yesterday. He wasn't believed to be a serious candidate.
While Blank also has interviewed candidates for the head-coaching vacancy while conducting his search for a general manager, the new GM will select the coach.
If Heckert gets the job, his top head-coaching candidate is believed to be Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Spagnuolo spent eight years as an assistant on Andy Reid's Eagles staff before taking the Giants job last January.
Heckert is thought to be the main reason the Falcons asked the Giants for permission to speak with Spagnuolo this week. The Giants turned them down, which means Atlanta can't interview him until after his team is eliminated from the playoffs.
"In our opinion, and in Steve's as well, this is not the time [to interview]," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "Steve's focus and concentration, as it should be, is right on this game, just like we all are. He and I spoke about this, and he is the guy that brought it up first. He said, 'I don't want to be distracted at this point in time with anything.' "
If Heckert is hired and he hires Spagnuolo, the Eagles could lose at least one other valuable employee. Quarterbacks coach Pat Shurmur is thought to be on the short list of people Spagnuolo would consider as his offensive coordinator.
If Heckert takes the Falcons job, it's uncertain whether the Eagles would replace him with someone inside the organization or go outside. The logical in-house replacement is vice president of player personnel Jason Licht.

The Rams offseason is going to be a blast.
1. apparently Georgia is finally close to death and once she kicks her asshole son will inherit and then HOPEFULLY sell the team to someone who knows what they are doing
2. John Shaw continues to show hes an idiot, refusing to hire an actual football mind to decide what players to cut/bring in (the way Miami did with Tuna)
3. Scott Linehan has been retained for his 3rd and final contract year, even though he A. sucks shit as a HC and B. had his 3 best players all blow up at him on the sidelines during ridiculous losses, and c. runs a conservative, boring, worthless offense even though they have one of the best QBs, RBs and WRs in football.
4. While other teams have made staff moves already and are preparing for 2008, Linehan hasnt even held his end of the year meetings with his players or his front office. they fired the OC, and while they say they want to bring in Cam Cameron as OC (whos style would so very much fit this team), they havent even made contact with him yet, choosing to wait until he probably goes elsewhere.
and then they have the draft to screw up! whatch them pick MCFadden even though for 90% of the season they played with 5 "street free agents" on the O Line

Figures the Giants might lose the best defensive coordinator they've had since Fox. Wouldn't Jim Johnson be a more logical choice for them? Spags had been a defensive coordinator for about 10 minutes in this league.

I'm not really sure exactly but Tom Heckert I'm pumped about. I view the Eagles and the Colts as two of the best run franchises draft wise so I'm pretty happy. I think they might take a little longer with the coaching search. I wouldn't worry too much either, who knows what they are thinking really.

It's pretty funny they'd hire a guy in a taped interview, but he is EXACTLY what they need. Mckay is a suit. He dosen't get his hands dirty. I doubt he even watches much football. That's why they find guys in the 5th and they get shite in the 1st. The scouts are the ones out there digging in the dirt finding the talent. Mckay I doubt leaves the office to watch college games more than 10 times a year and he blew that last year. Mckay hasn't done shit since Ruskell left.
Amobi Okoye and (first year All Pro at SF) Patrick Willis were two of my favorite players in the last draft both of which would have fit in fantastically with the Falcons this year. I think I even took PW in our Mock Draft. Instead they decided to take a need based player because they let All Pro Pat Kerney walk. (They couldn't afford him so I understand that) still Okoye was right there and they take a converted end whose out a year early when they had a 20 year old kid who is athletically amazing, smart as a whip and could have played end as well as Anderson this year or backed up the oft stupidly injured Rod Coleman....and he already played for that idiot coach they hired.
I love the idea of the Dimitroff hire, especially since he's young and this is a great environment for a guy that needs to replace A lot of talent to make his mark very early. This team is a blank slate. Maybe one or two positions are set everything else is open. He can build both lines over the next few years and everyone will love him for it. We've been begging for OL talent for 20 years. He's coming from an organization which puts the premium where it matters....Offensive Line...Defensive Line...depth.

Lets hope not. As I understand it, Mckay will be running the stadium upgrades/new stadium campaign deal and be completely out of football operations. It is a little troubling. I was all ready for Heckert...and this comes out of left field.... but at this point, they've made so many stupid decisions I'm hoping this one will stick.
