Talking about Three Imaginary Boys, its not a big expression of The Cure sound, but it was the beggining of it all.
Basically they had a more "punk" sound, more rough. Just a bunch of kids anyway.
But you cant deny that there are some great songs from that era. Boys Don't Cry still a classic, but it's not the only good one.
17 Seconds is a transition to their more well known dark sound. I dont know if its a transition to be sincere, since it's a complete different sound already.
If you analyse the demos from the 3IG-era, there are some songs like Winter, where you'll notice the begginning of their darker sound.

Pornography, their 4 album, is one of key albums of their carreer.
Robert totally possed by a dark sound. No wonder they're called goth by some people, and how they inspired many new goth bands, without even being goth.
It's more angrier than Faith and even more somber.
The opening lines:
"Doesn't it matter if we all die"
The closing lines:
One more day like today and I'll kill you A desire for flesh And real blood I'll watch you drown in the shower Pushing my life through your open eyes
I must fight this sickness Find a cure I must fight this sickness

Then it comes the Top.
Oops....the first wrong step in their career. Not a terrible album by any means, but if compared to the previous and the next one, it's bad.
The band were in crisis, Robert hired some guys to record the instruments, he played the most of them. It was a big mess. The biggest during The Cure career.
Anyway, it's a important record because it introduces a more poppier sound, a thing that would continue with the next 2 records.
While it's probably their worst record, there are some worth checking tunes. The famous Catterpilar is here, also Piggy in the Mirror and Dressing Up. The rest i will left to the key songs thing.

i'm not huge on their early 'classics' like pornography and i think bloodflowers and the self-titled are great albums that fall only a little short of their best work. does this baffle you?

hmmm depends, what you think about these albums: Faith? Head On The Door? Wish? Disintegration? Wild Mood Swings? Kiss Me?

Faith: like i said not much of a fan of the early goth stuff
Head on the Door: great album, those songs are irresistible
Wish: a few songs I'm not big on but at it's best i think it can hang with disintegration, which is no small feat
Disintegration: one of the all-time greatest albums in music history. a lot of praise has been heaped on it, it deserves all of it and much much more.
Wild Mood Swings: meh, i don't hate it as much as most seem to but it's a big step down for them.
Kiss Me: love it, a sprawling mess but that's what makes it so good

I'm a huge Disintegration fan, but I also enjoy their pop side, which is why I favor Wish. It has the gloom and doom and lush instrumentation of Disintegration as well as some kickass rock tunes and some of their most awesome pop songs.
