my breakdown:
1. Only root for one pro team per sport. 2. Never stop rooting for that team
bullshit.
i like the patriots because i started playing madden 94 with drew bledsoe and marion butts dominated. and because i liked their jerseys. true story: i have a few old patriots jerseys. then tom brady came along. it's a marvel watching the guy play. and bill b, genius that he is. it's amazing watching excellence sometimes, you know?
i also grew up in a giants household, so i root for them. i wrote a bears blog and i found it more interesting to write about them when they won. hence, i wanted them to win.
however, over the years i found myself rooting for players and an exciting game rather than teams. brett favre's my favorite player of all time: he's great, fun to watch and loves playing football. so i root for him. i liked steve young quite a bit. was i a trader because i kinda liked the giants but also didn't want steve young to die a horrible death? does the same go for brett? every steeler loves big ben. he seems like a nice guy, gutsy and team-oriented. why shouldn't i want to root for that guy to succeed? why should i hate peyton? because i happen to like watching tom brady, too? he's never done anything to me. he works hard and does his job as well as or better than anyone in the league with class. that's the guy i'm going to root for -- not a fuck like plaxico burress, or randy moss, who play only when they want to. should i really hate peyton? give me a good reason.
when it comes down to it, some guys are assholes and some guys are OK. should i really keep rooting for a tean even if they're made up of a bunch of jackasses? chargers fans must really love their team right now. i think johnny damon's a perfect example of players not really caring about what team they play for, for the most part. it's money to them. it's their job.
i couldn't give a fuck about adhering to more rules. life is all rules and i don't need a bunch of people telling me i'm a terrible sports fan because i happen to enjoy players and watching the sport more than specific teams with always changing rosters that i should be forced to root for because i happened to be born in their geographical area.
3. Never root for your fantasy team at the expense of your favorite team
ok. i really don't care.
4. If you're white, you may never under any circumstances wear an NBA jersey.
"jeez, look at that guy. he looks pretty dumb." who the fuck cares? wear what you want to wear.
5. Never tuck in an NFL jersey
same as above.
6. Never wear a jersey with your own name on the back
i don't have the money to buy a regular jersey, so a custom one is not an issue.

why couldn't you post all this crap in the original thread? Not only are you a lame sports fan, but you're attention seeking lame sports fan.

I'm a Steelers fan, Pirates fan, Penguins fan and Pitt Panthers fan, I will always be one, I will never be a fan of any other team.
true story.
now I do get what you're saying about enjoying watching other teams because of certain players. I like watching Tom Brady too, I think he's an amazing athlete, but I would never call myself a Pats fan. Ever. Even if I had to move to Boston for a job. Steelers fan.

but it does mean you're a terrible sports fan, josh. if you truly bleed black and gold, the only team you can root for is the steelers. you should also hope tom brady gets decapitated in some ugly car wreck.
shame on you.

i think your problem is "real fans" root for teams, not players
and by real fans, i mean me, tubbs, and everyone who agrees w/ us
oh -- so i can't be the fan of a sport if i don't pick a team? i see.

is that what i said?
you said i can't be a "real" fan unless i root for only one team. so am i a "fake" fan? where does this put me?

I wouldn't be rooting for them if the Steelers were still in it. Steelers are out. I'd like to see Brett get a ring and get out on top. After that, I will not be rooting for the Packers anymore. That still doesn't make me a fan of the Green Bay Packers.
