Anti-war protesters get permit for GOP convention rally Associated Press
A group planning an anti-war rally and march during this summer's Republican National Convention has secured a permit for a demonstration at the state Capitol.
Leaders of the so-named Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War told state officials they are expecting between 30,000 and 50,000 people at the Sept. 1 rally. It will be held on the opening day of the GOP nominating convention.
The state permit is only step one for the group. It still needs city permission to hold the march to the Xcel Energy Center, the site of the national convention.
St. Paul city officials won't accept applications from protest groups until March 1.
I'm sorry, but....wer need permits now to protest? Is this strange/scary/absurd to anyone else. Please corect me if im wrong and this is completely standard across the world.... especially the land of the free?

Not sure about this one...maybe PD could help, but as far as I see it: The consitution provides you with the right to free speech, however this right can be subject to certain regulations as long as the regulations further a substantial state interest. I would assume that MN has an interest in maintaining the flow of traffic, preventing pedestrians from blocking roadways, etc. I can see why they would require that you obtain a permit for such an activity, and I can see how it can be constituionally justified...It's not like they are prohibiting you from protesting, the are just regulating the process...I however, have no experience in such matters and my opinion is pure speculation.

Land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy.

Hey, do you see me marching my ass around the capital protesting about documents the gov't is withholding about UFOs? France released theirs. England released theirs. But no I don't go marching around. I go to school and I go to work.

so?
So get a life. I'm not saying you can't protest, I'm just saying quit wasting your time. Or should I say, quit making threads like this that attempt to make a point that America doesn't accept free speech anymore. Cry cry cry. There is still free speech. I open up the newspaper to the editoral section and hey! what do you know?! There are opinions! yay!

some people would argue that protesting is, indeed, 'getting a life' or at the least, making some effort to get a life they deem worth living. wouldn't that be more along the lines of admirable rather than "cry cry cry"? does it occur to you that maybe just writing a letter to the editor doesn't always accomplish a whole lot?
was Martin Luther King, Jr. a loser who needed to get a life instead of protesting for civil rights?
and what's the problem with making a thread about freedom of speech, or lack there of, if you don't actually have a problem with freedom of speech, or expressing one's opinions, or maybe, protest the beaureacratic rig-a-ma-roll people go through in order to exercise their right to protest? I mean, on a message board more than pretty much anywhere else that I can think of, it seems like people express their right to freedom of speech much more than in real life.
Just seems a little retarded to me that you'd be against either people protesting because you think they should go to work instead or whatever, or people making a thread inquiring about it.

Well I'll be...Malice, it seems as if we finally agree on something...
The ability to protest is a fundamental right. Why would anyone who lives in a democratic society oppose the practice, let alone criticize others for engaging in it?
Looking forward to trying to be be friends with mama....

Well, maybe, I find Dr. King's chances for change a lot more feasiable than some anti war protestors who won't change a damn thing because the GOP haven't been listening to them for the last 5 years now, and I'm doubting they ever will. And maybe they should take in the fact that we're not going to just pull out all of our troops with a snap of a finger. If you were sympathizing with gay protesters, I would understand. I'm just thinking reallistically

The cause has no effect upon the right. And for you to attempt to deny that right from anyone is abhorrent

I have to edit my post because I misunderstood what you said.
I'm not denying anyone that right.
First, I was saying that people need to get a life. Because they protest for days and if you consider that a life...fine go ahead i guess.
Second, I was just expressing how annoyed I was with people who say that America doesn't follow the first ammendment anymore because that's ludicrous
Third, I explained in further detail why the anti war protestors are wasting their time.
