Quote:
An NHL team owner who is requesting anonymity said that -- barring a major, unforeseen turnaround -- he expects the league to make an announcement canceling the rest of the 2004-05 season either after Thursday's meeting or Friday, EJ Hradek of ESPN the Magazine has learned.

If the season in canceled, the NHL will become the the first North American sports league ever has lost an entire season to a labor dispute. The Stanley Cup has been awarded every year since 1919 when a flu epidemic wiped out the final series between Montreal and Seattle.

One day after the NHLPA rejected the NHL's latest proposal, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA Executive Director Bob Goodenow returned to the bargaining table Thursday for the first time in weeks. The two leaders weren't present at a series of informal meetings the past two weeks.

The main sticking point remains the NHL's commitment to getting cost certainty and the players' association's vows never to accept a salary cap. The union flatly turned down the somewhat flexible cap -- which the league termed a "floating team payroll range" -- formally proposed by the league this week.

The lockout reached its 141st day Thursday, and it has forced the cancellation of 772 of the 1,230 regular-season games, plus the All-Star Game.

The NHL has been operating under the same collective bargaining agreement since 1995, when the last lockout went 103 days before a 48-game season was played.

They should have announced this a long time ago.

That is quite sickening. I miss the All Star game more than anything else. I loved watching all the skills competition, and I liked when some of the retired players would come back and play a game against the rookies.

What about Detroit's UHL team, the Mechanics? I saw that they had Chelios and Hatcher there.

They're dead last and not on tv. I don't have the funds to go see them live... or do much of anything aside from eat and go to college.

I like Draper... I can't stand Chelios or Hatcher.

I think that what they're doing is stupid. There was an interview in the local paper with Steve Kerr, who recently set the all-time minor league scoring record. He said the average player makes between $12 000 and $25 000 a year. Consider that the NHLPA is paying players that much in a month to NOT play... they're just taking jobs from people who are barely getting by as it is.

Irony may come back to bite them in the ass when the guys who's jobs they are stealing today are playing for the Detroit Red Wings next year.

I am actually pretty upset about this. Im not the biggest hockey fan, but I always depend on hockey games to carry me through the boring Feb and March months, until March Madness and until Opening Day. Also, there is just something about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it just draws me in every season, regardless of who's in and who's out.

THIS is why the XFL is so badly missed. Who doesnt love extra football in March and April.

It was crappy football..Yes. but it was also, football in general. I often sit around asking myself "Where's my football?" Plus, if it werent for the XFL we wouldnt have such inventions as the "sky cam". Yes, that was an XFL invention. Or the forward pass...well the second one wasnt XFL but the first one is.

I could definitely do without the sky cam and I think I'd rather watch Brian Boitano than "He Hate Me"

Just me though

Well, I hate both sides, I hope the one true winner in this situation let's both the owners and the players know that the only people who decide the fate of this great sport are the FANS!~!!!!!

At first Iwas on the side of the owners... now I completely disagree with both of them.

i think its a disgrace that those guys signed with this UHL team.. the players keep saying they are looking to make a good deal for the future nhl players.. but yet they have no problem taking jobs away from UHL players (future nhl players?) who are making 500 bucks a week and probably just getting by on that kind of salary. Plus the UHL has a salary cap, i thought the nhl players are totally against that?
I am totally on the owners side in this one.
