"Here's what happened to me Friday, and since I lived in Newark (ML King Blvd) for a couple of years and now live one town over from Asbury, I think I have decent perspective...
Got to my hotel in Bangkok after midnight. Having slept through dinner on the plane, I was starved, but found that the hotel had no vending machines, nada.
I asked the concierge if there was food nearby, and he said, "Across the highway, but this late it's 'dinsiss'"
"Dinsiss?" I thought. "You mean it's closed?" "No, it's open, but 'dinsiss'".
Turns out that "dinsiss" meant "dangerous". As I walked around the corner into an alley, the women at the food stands looked down or started walking away.
A few guys peeled off from the tables where they were drinking and started to casually walk towards the open end of the alley I came from. A couple others started heading me off, so I beat feet the way I came before anyone else could block it off.
I walked back into the hotel, and the concierge was talking to a cop, who started yelling at me: "Should not go there by yourself. People die there! Ve-e-e-ry dinsiss!""
