The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a 2007 film directed by Julian Schnabel. It is based on the French memoir Le Scaphandre et le Papillon by Jean-Dominique Bauby.
The film describes Bauby's life after suffering a massive stroke at the age of 43, which left him with a condition known as locked-in syndrome. The condition paralyzed him; his only remaining means of communication was the blinking of his left eyelid. The film premiered in competition at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival on May 22.

be prepared for some heavy, heavy cinema. i loved it, and it certainly should be nominated for best picture over juno or atonement. really a beautiful movie, i can't think of one bad thing to say about it.

It's supposed to be more innovative visually and a lot less melodramatic than other, similarly "uplifting" films which are almost always ALWAYS garbage

I saw it the weekend before- this had absolutely been an awesome year for quality cinema, and I'd place this at the top of my pile. Probably more for the subject matter than anything else.
I've worked with people with Locked-In Syndrome before. I'm in neurological rehab, so a lot of this is pretty familiar to me. Screw Emile Hirsch and Johnny Depp- Mathieu Amalric is the one who should've taken Tommy Lee Jones/Viggo Mortenson/George Clooney's spot in the Oscar noms.
If something like this ever happens to me, I want Marie-Josée Croze to be my speech therapist, qualified or not. Loved the line about it not being fair that he's got her working so hard for him and all he can do is check her out with his eye.
