I can't get my computer to start. It seems to go in this infinite death loop and I can't get the computer to boot up.
The first screen says Windows did not start successfully. A hardware/software change may have caused this. Start in Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/Networking, Safe Mode w/Command Prompt, Last Known Good Configuration, Start Windows Normally.
I've tried all options, and they all lead me to the same screen: Stop c0002218 Registry file failure. Cannot load hive file. systemroot\system32\config\software. Corrupt, absent, or not writable. Begin dump of physical memory. It counts to 100 and the entire process starts over.
Thanks for the link. I've been looking online and most of the solutions look like you need the XP disk or you're computer can actually boot up in safe mode. I've been running a bootleg copy of XP for about 5 years now so I don't know where the disk is.
Does anyone know if this is definitely a software issue and not a hardware problem? I'm thinking about getting another hard drive, installing XP on it, and then attaching my old hard drive as a slave to recover the files I need. Should this work?

Yes most certainly if your HD is not severely damaged which I assume is not the case here as it seems that only certain system files are corrupted. But if you didnt crashed the PC before this event took place, then it sure is a good choice to buy a new HD.

run chkdsk from the command prompt... also press f8 when booting for safe mode if that even works... otherwise depending on the age of the comp you might be better off buying a new one altogether and then installing your hd as a slave etc etc...
