Thought a lot of people here might be interested in this. The low-down: it comes out Jan 16, 2009. Written directed by Frank Miller. Starring Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Eva Mendes. It'll be done in a style similar to Sin City and 300.

Robocop 2 was cooler than the first, even without Red Forman. Also, no Robocop is very cool.

The only thing I care is that they make Dark Knight Returns someday. I have no interest in anything else he's done, really.

Adapted from the legendary graphic novels, Will Eisner's The Spirit is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister Frank Miller (creator of 300 and Sin City). It is the story of a former rookie-cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as The Spirit (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit's beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront ... all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Surrounding him at every turn are Ellen Dolan (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; Sand Saref (Eva Mendes), the jewel thief with dangerous curves; Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson), a punk secretary and frigid vixen; Plaster of Paris (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; Lorelei (Jaime King), a phantom siren; and Morgenstern (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop. In the vein of Batman Begins and Sin City, The Spirit takes us on a sinister, gut-wrenching ride with a hero who is born, murdered and born again.

Sounds very promising if it comes to fruition.

As of right now, I'll watch anything that Miller has a hand in.

Lionsgate Loves Frank Miller's Spirit
Source: Superhero Hype!
February 8, 2008

Superhero Hype! has learned that Lionsgate is really digging what writer/director Frank Miller is doing with Will Eisner's The Spirit. They've already signed him for two sequels to the graphic novel adaptation and, from what the studio has seen, are expecting it to be a blockbuster when the action-adventure opens on January 16, 2009.

"The Spirit" tells the visceral, action-packed story of a man (Gabriel Macht) who fakes his own death and fights crime from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) -- who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face -- has a different mission: he's going to wipe out the entire city. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront... all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader.

Scarlett Johansson :li: , Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Paz Vega, Jamie King, Dan Lauria, Stana Katic, Johnny Simmons and Louis Lombardi co-star.

did anybody else see this yet? as with sin city, the aesthetics were very nice, but i felt this was just over the top cheesy. it was entertaining, funny at times, and the ladies were very nice to look at.

i've read from a lot of places that its one of the worst movies ever made. pretty disappointing considering the potential of the source material.

Yea I've been very intrigued by the reaction on this, especially from the hardcore fanboy crowd at places like AICN. I've rarely seen them completely eviscerate a movie like this, it's like on "Battlefield Earth" levels or something. I mean I've never been into comic books or graphic novels, but I'm a huge film noir fan, and I absolutely loved the Sin City movie, as many people probably did this looked like it would be within the same realm.

I can't help but wonder though, to the people who have trashed it as they have, like could they not get that vibe at all from having first seen the full trailer awhile back? Because everyone seemed fairly excited for it still then at that point. Or was it that misrepresentative of the picture as a whole.

I guess you maybe also wonder does this tell you how important having Robert Rodriguez on Sin City was, that Miller as the "co-director" on that, if it was just Miller would it have turned out anything like this bad.

personally i had mixed feelings, sometimes it was great, sometimes it was kinda cheesy and shitty. overall i thought they did an allright job with it, but it makes me want to read the comic more than I would ever want to watch the movie again.

my favorite line from the movie. "something smells dental... and nazi"

all of the women in the movie where a joy to witness.

also im curious as to the history of this character. the spirit and the shadow seem sort of similar, at least physically, who came first?

Imagine Sin City written by the guys that made Battlefield Earth
