Myself and three of my mates have decided, come hell or high water, we're going to America this summer. The only problem is, we have no idea where to go. Somewhere along the West Coast, as cheap as we can get, and since one of the girls is a surf-freak, some waves where possible. Any suggestions guys??

San Luis Obispo has some surfing in its vicinity, and a youth hostel.

Do y'all really have to worry about the cost? The exchange rate is very much in your favor.

A former SD native we all know and love told us to 'go to the water' and thats where we ended up...such a deadly spot..

Thanks lads, even with favourable exchange rates, we're still poor alcoholic students. We won't be able to turn the States into a den of iniquity if we spend all our money on accomodation. And surfing is not an issue for me, I'm a paddler, I'll be keeping the beach warm while the others attempt to snotter themselves on the waves.

basically it's got a really high crime rate and, supposedly, the highest murder rate per capita for a city of it's size.
the rap group N.W.A (and several other rappers) have come from the city and have spoke of what life in the city is like...and it ain't pretty.

its a great way to see the states, and great free accomodation if you get a nice one. Only thing you pay for is the gas.

Yeah, you gotta be careful in some parts of Long Beach too.

I would imagine that Santa Cruz would be chock full of youth hostels, and that area has some surfing and the like. And not all of their Redwoods have been cut down.

I fail as a Californian as I don't surf, but perhaps there are some on here who do.

God no, we'll be peddling ass probably...we're looking to get jobs over there for the summer, but if that doesn't work out we'll come home early. We may try to make money by doing turtle impressions. Scooping out a hole in the sand, lying down in it belly-first, then flapping your arms like flippers and cooing "TUUR-tle, TUUR-tle..." People will pay us to stop.
