What are some essential epic films, both modern and classic?

Gone With The Wind
Ben-Hur
Black Narcissus
The Vikings

I also really enjoy Duel In The Sun, but not everyone feels the same.

There are boatloads more, but I'm a bit tired right now and don't feel like thinking 'em up.

Good, but not my favorite Lean (I'd give that honor to Ryan's Daughter). I'd take The Bridge On The River Kwai over it easily.

Anyone ever heard of this one:

Intolerance: Love's Struggle Through the Ages, a silent film directed by D. W. Griffith in 1916, is considered one of the great masterpieces of the Silent Era.

I've been meaning to see it for ages.

Sounds really interesting.

Intolerance was a colossal undertaking filled with monumental sets, lavish period costumes, and more than 3,000 extras. The film consisted of four distinct but parallel stories that demonstrated mankind's intolerance during four different ages in world history. The timeline covered approximately 2,500 years, beginning with:

1. The "Babylonian" period (539 BC) depicts the fall of Babylon as a result of intolerance arising from a conflict between devotees of different Babylonian gods.
2. The "Judean" era (circa 27 AD) recounts how intolerance led to the crucifixion of Jesus.
3. The French Renaissance (1572) tells of the failure of the Edict of Toleration that led to the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre.
4. Modern America (1914) demonstrates how crime, moral puritanism, and conflicts between ruthless capitalists and striking workers helped ruin the lives of Americans.

Also interesting is that it was essentially a way for Griffith to cover his ass after the infamously racist The Birth of a Nation, which, by the way, is for all intents and purposes the very first epic film.

I think traditionally epic has meant a huge budget, cast and scope. But some people believe films like The Godfather are epic as well.

mock the love story all you want, but Titanic is epic IMO.
