DiCaprio 'to produce anime film'

Leonardo DiCaprio is to produce a live-action version of anime classic Akira, according to Hollywood Reporter.

The 1988 Japanese film was considered to be a groundbreaking piece of animation, co-written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo.

It is set in 2019 in post-nuclear war New Tokyo where a biker gains super powers after being subjected to experiments.

Warner Bros is aiming for a release in 2009, it is reported.

Unlike the original, the new movie will be set in New Manhattan, a city rebuilt with Japanese cash.

The only good thing to come out of Akira was the South Park spoof other then that wasn't that good.

1) The original is awesome.

2) I hope this never happens.

The original was good. I'm curious to see who they get to direct this one.

DiCaprio is the king of the world right now, I don't think he'd do a movie that had a high suckage factor. This could be cool.

Akira is expected to be developed into two live action films with the first scheduled for a summer 2009 release.[1][2] Warner Bros. and Appian Way will adapt the two movies from the Akira (manga) of the same name. The first film is expected to be an adaptation of the first three volumes. The second film may cover the last three volumes. Ruairi Robinson is directing in his feature film debut. He was nominated for a short film Oscar in 2002 for Fifty Percent Grey. Gary Whitta is writing the script. Andrew Lazar, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jennifer Davisson will produce the film. No announcement has been made regarding the cast.

Akira is great. Especially the comic. The movie is a little to condensed, but splitting it into two should make it a lot more comprehensible. This could be really good (unlike the Dragon Ball movie...)

It'll probably just be Leo standing on one side of a room shouting "Tetsuo!" and Mark Wahlberg on the opposite side shouting "Akira!" over and over again.

It's been ages since I saw the anime. The thing I most remember is my mom repeatedly shouting "What in the hell are you watching?" from the other room.
