I really don't think there is too much debate on this topic, but I had to talk about it.

So, today in one of my film classes (Topical film studies Teen Film) my professor asked us if we watched the Oscars and some of us nodded and then he went off on a rant on how the Academy is racist, saying that during the montages of all the hosts in the past years they didn't show Whoopi Goldberg and therefore they are racist. Then he went on to say that only three or four black actors have won an award in the last decade. Then I corrected him and told him seven black actors have won. I went on to tell him that it doesn't matter how many win, and that there shouldn't be a quota, that the best performance deserves each oscar. He went on to talk about how they're against women too. Then I mentioned Sophia Coppola and Diablo Cody. He pretty much shut up after that. I don't know...he pissed me off. And no one else would speak up!

Heh, about the only student feedback in my classes is to correct the professor when they neglect a negative sign, or some other minor error. Perhaps one day I will have a classmate who will vehemently argue that Newtonian mechanics is a lie or somesuch, but I doubt it.

Well, phd professors may be the authority on their topics (except my film professor, I don't know why he teaching film), but they're sure as hell not the authority on life. And the students who do think so are the ones who nod their head every time the professor looks their way.

Are you a teen?
Is your professor a teen?
Or is the class about teen movies?

I heard Whoopi was pissed about this, even though they showed her in a different montage of past award winners.

I always seemed to have a kid in every class that would find some small point in a professor's lecture and proceed to argue about it with him for 30 mins, completely wasting the lecture and everyone's time. I'm not saying you're that kid, but it just reminds me of that.

I don't understand why the Oscars came up. Unless Juno got robbed!

1. I'm 21. My professor is in his 30s.
2. Teen Film is one of many types of film (like the Western, Horror, Fairy Tale etc) and yes the class is strictly about teen films.
3. It's not unusual for the Oscars to come up in a film related class. There is nothing baffeling about it.
4. No, I wasn't wasting anyones time. The guy started off the two hour class (which is a chunk of time) with a rant about the oscars being racist, and i found it to be the stupidest comment i heard so far this week. And I actually had the balls to say something to him while everyone else sat there listening and taking this false information in.
5. Are we done asking stupid questions? And ready to get back to my main argument?

I watched them last night (downloaded), and I can't even recall seeing Letterman or even Billy Crystal!

and if he mentioned Whoopy he should have Chris Rock too ;)

They didn't just leave out Whoopi, they left out Steve Martin and well. There goes his racist theory. Can't get whiter that good'ol Steve.

The guy sounds like a real tool. I mean, come on. He's teaching a FILM class.

And they can't even trust him with ALL Films, only Teen film? That's like, the dumbest catagory. :)

I agree, but he also teaches the Western, but that class was full.
