Die hard Yankees fan here sincerely worried about Steinbrenner wasting away the core of this team! What won those world series was a strong core of comradery and hard working players. Many of these free agent signings and trades that Steinbrenner wants to pull off may seriously fuck up the team for good. I would rather have a mediocre team with homegrown boys than a one-year at a time thrown together free agent team. This goes for all teams.... stick to your homegrowns when it is fit. And stay loyal to players that have brought you to great places.

Not sure who you are talking about specifically. I definitely don't want Pedro (they say most Yankee insiders do not want him either) but I think George may do what he wants with that one. Other than that, they don't have too much left in the farm system right now, especially pitching. I would like to see them 'clean up' the team but getting rid of some of the guys like Brown or Giambi but they will be forced to eat some or much of their salary to do so. I would like to see them pick up Leiber's option, 2004 was only his first full (not even) year back after Tommy John surgery, I think he has a little left in the tank. They are "stuck" with Vasquez, hopefully he can turn it around next year. Gordon is probably gone. Lofton too.
The 96-00 Yanks were built through the farm system. They started to pay their own guys to stay with the team (Jeter, Bernie, Rivera, Pettite, Posada...) but they needed to fill gaps to stay on top. I never wanted Giambi, I thought that was one of the first bad decisions they made. I don't mind getting Arod for Soriano, remember Texas is paying nearly 40% of his salary. I didn't want Sheff but he turned out to be better than I thought (except for the last 4 games of the WS).

At least his team has won some championships in recent memory, he did listen to his baseball people there for a little while anyway. I have to admit I could picture these guys being friends or bitter enemies.

For all his lunatic behavior, George turned what was a crummy team in the decade before he bought them into a billion-dollar franchise and won more championships than any other owner since then.
And Hank is the kid of his who's so dopey and useless that George was going to leave the team to an in-law over him...

Dopey and useless? For the last 15 years or so, he's been running George's horse racing interests and has had a lot of success.

Do the Yanks even need Cashman? It seems like every morning Hank is quoted in the NY papers discussing what potential roster moves/plans the organization is discussing. His play by play of the Johan negotiations would have made Joe Buck envious. Unless they include a life supply of duct tape in any future negotiations with Cashman, my money is on the Yanks having a new G.M. come 2009.

if you followed the Santana negotiations, you'd have seen that Hank wanted him every step of the way....but Cashman and was against it. Based on the end result, and the fact that they'll be discussing an extension for Cash in the next few weeks, I'd say his place in the organization is secure (for now).

I did follow the negotiations. There is a difference between an owner "wanting" a player and openly discussing which players on his own team he is willing/not willing to include in any potential deals. Fred Wilpon, "openly wanted" Santana, he wasnt talking to baseball writers about which Mets prospects a potential deal would include or not include. He left that up to his G.M.
Hank's big mouth must go over really well with the Yanks "baseball" people like Cashman, Gene Michael, etc. He needs to take on more of Hal's persona.
It'll all be mute anyway if the young arms struggle.

um, ok. But none of this has anything to do with Cashman's job security or his role in the organization.

I dunno, he's not have as bad as George used to be...and that seemed to work out pretty well for the Yankees most of the time.

I think you mean moot....and you're right, what Hank says is irrelevant when you're talking about what happens on the field. I understand why his comments attract so much attention, but let's not place too much importance on them. Let's also not forget he doesn't run things by himself....Hal has just as much power. Maybe even more.
