can someone explain this to me? i rented a movie the other night and the dvd wouldn't work on either my dvd player or my playstation 2. rented another, worked fine. the guy at the movie place said it had to do with regions. i kinda just played along and acted like i knew what he meant.

while regional lockout would cause this exact sort of thing to happen, its unlikely that a rented dvd would be anything other than region 1. the guy at the store probably heard of it before and doesnt know exactly what hes talking about. or he knows, and assumes theres no way that you know.

or i guess it could be a different region. ive been watching too much house... i just assumed that the guy was lying.

Nah, a rental place wouldn't be renting out European DVDs ... the guy just didn't know what he was talking about. Either the disc was defective or you own a Japanese DVD player and PS2.

That reminds me ... I have a never-watched season 2 Simpsons box set I'll sell you for a low price.

i'd say 90%-if not all DVD players are hackable to make them play all regions.

Info on how to do this can be found where?

And I know most players allow you to switch the region, but isn't there a limit on how many times you can do this?

Just google your dvd player model and some variation of the word "hack."

If I have a region-free DVD player, don't I still need to do something my TV?

Depends. If the player converts Pal to NTSC and vice versa, that's all you should need.

I have a 5 or 6 year old Sony Vega (CRT, Flatscreen). I dont know where the manual is and I have no idea how where to find out if it converts.
