Microsoft: “We’ll support Blu-ray” Fri Mar 07, 2008 at 03:00 PM ET
Amid rumors that Microsoft is in talks to add Blu-ray support to its Xbox 360 game console, CEO Steve Ballmer has indicated the company’s intention to support the remaining high-def format.
As reported by The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took part in an onstage conversation at the company’s Mix08 Internet conference in Las Vegas Thursday, where the topics discussed included Microsoft’s high-def plans following the discontinuation of Toshiba’s HD DVD format.
Without offering specifics, Ballmer said the company will work to support Blu-ray.
“We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like,” Ballmer stated. “I think the world moves on. Toshiba has moved on. We've moved on, and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense.”
.. so an external blu-ray player for the xbox 360 like the hd-dvd one? or a new 360 w/ blu-ray support built right in? any way .. awesome!

A 360 add on for about what they charged for the HD one would be fantastic. Saves me $400 on a game system I don't want in a couple of months.

I still wouldn't buy a PS3 for anything other than the games. A buddy of mine got one back in January and has yet to purchase a single game. He does have a bunch of blu-rays though. Go Sony!

an external blu-ray player would be sweet for the xbox 360. 2 external players for my 360? fuck yeah!! but what about gaming. there hasn't been any games yet that have reached over 25 gigs. will there be a game to hit that mark? or will we have to wait for the next generation systems .. in like 4 more years to do it?

it's still pretty early in this generation of games...as time goes on games are going to get even more in depth with graphics/interactivity/etc and i'm sure the full potential will be utilized in a year and a half to two years from now.

it'd be cool if they offered some sort of trade in program to help knock the cost down on a future external accessory (if that's the direction they go).
I know a couple people who bought the HD drive and now are going to be stuck with the movies they have...I guess that's not too bad though

Microsoft gaming exec Aaron Greenberg tells Reuters that he isn't working with rival Sony (SNE) to add Blu-ray drives to its Xbox 360 videogame console. "Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience."
That, of course, leaves plenty of room for talks tomorrow, next week, or maybe never.
Microsoft (MSFT) is convinced that digital media downloads -- not hi-def discs -- are the next step in movie distribution. They might be right. And if they're not, they can add Blu-ray support in the future. In the near term, that keeps the Xbox 360 cheaper than Sony's slower selling PS3.
