Good film from one of my all time favorite directors, Werner Herzog. Saw it last night at a place downtown, was pretty impressed. The film is based off a true story (which was made into an EXCELLENT documentary by Herzog in 1997 called Little Deiter Needs to Fly), in which an American pilot is shot down over Laos in the early days of the Vietnam conflict. Christian Bale is terrific, one of the best performances I've seen in some time. The beginning and ending felt really tacked on and were NOT very good, but the jungle scenes are handled exceptionally well. No one does man-vs.-nature better than Herzog. FUCKING NOBODY. Bale is taken prisoner at a POW camp in Laos, and the camp scenes and dialogue are handled marvelously.

Herzog came up a little short with his hero but the territory was familiar for him: A sentiment of relentless determination to follow through, with a hint of madness. Its a little more fleeting than in some of his other films. Still, the most beautiful cinematography you'll see all year, and a very worthy performance.

I can't wait to see this. I adore Bale in everything he's done, whether it's great (American Psycho), good (The Prestige) or bad (Shaft). Is this film out in wide release, or did you see an advanced screening?

It goes wide Friday, 500 theaters I believe. I doubt we get it here, but I'm crossing my fingers for this or Sunshine to rescue me from summer blockbuster hell here.

Yeah, enjoy that. Me, I'll be cursing all of you who get to see it I'm sure. Maybe one of the theaters around here will surprise me and get it. I have at least 6 theaters around here to choose from and they all play the same shit.

I have one theater, and I will definately not get this movie. I recently rented Aguirre Wrath of God so I may have another point of comparison besides Grizzley Man lol.

Doesn't look like I'll be getting Rescue Dawn in my area this Friday, but I definitely want to see it.

I got to see this yesterday and I pretty much agree with your assessment. The ending felt very tacked on and left a bad taste in my mouth (hopefully that's all true and I should just shut the fuck up) but the rest of it was pretty damn good. Bale is gold, I'll pretty much go see him in anything at this point.

10 bucks says the cinematography in "The Assassination of Jesse James" will be better 8)

But yeah I really want to see this film myself. I guess I'll have to wait until the dvd comes out

Saw it this weekend, and thought that it was very good. I didn't like the beginning and it had me worried for a few minutes, but that quickly went away as we finally learned a little about Dieter. Very good, and I was pleased with the ending, too.

And it was

I haven't really felt compelled to rent Rescue Dawn to watch it again. The documentary that Herzog did on the same story is absolutely mesmerizing.

I liked this one, but I wasn't really sold on it. Seemed really safe to me.

Yeah, kind of how I feel. Good movie, but not great.

I'm not thrilled with him so far.

Grizzly Man = Very Good
Aguirre = Good/Okay
Heart of Glass = Okay/Meh

He seems like a cool guy, but his films leave me kind of cold.
