CHARLOTTE (AP) — A Charlotte teenager has died after being shocked with a Taser during a confrontation with police at the grocery store where he worked.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said 17-year-old Darryl Wayne Turner died Thursday. An autopsy is pending.
The Charlotte Observer reported Friday that officers responded to a call at a Food Lion and saw Turner throwing something at a store manager.
Police said Turner appeared agitated, refused their commands and advanced toward an officer before the Taser was used.
Turner's mother, Tammy Fontenot, said her son told her earlier in the day that he had stolen Hot Pockets from the store and feared disciplinary action. Fontenot said she told him to go back to the store to face what happened.
[...] His mother, Tammi Fontenot, told Eyewitness News, "I want answers. I want to know why. I just want to know why."
Police said an argument escalated between Turner and one of his supervisors at a Food Lion on Prosperity Church Road. Officers said the teen assaulted a store manager by throwing an object after officers arrived on scene.
Police released a statement reading, "[Turner] was highly agitated and refused all verbal commands and began walking toward the officer." At that point, the officer used his Taser on Turner.
Turner went to Carolinas Medical Center-University, but he died a short time later.
Fontenot said her son and the manager have had problems in the past but she does not believe he became violent.
"When he gets upset, he is hard to talk to, but violent -- no. Act stupid, yes, mouth off, yes, but violent, no," she said.
Once homicide detectives finish their investigation, they will turn their findings over to the Mecklenburg County district attorney. A council of review made up of the officer's supervisor, internal affairs and a citizen will examine the findings of the internal investigation to see if all departmental policies were followed.
i also work for food lion (not at that store, thank god) and alledgedly he was a bagger on the front end. he was told to go home early (which happens to all of us...they cut our hours like fucking crazy so they can make payroll and if i didn't live with my dad i'm sure i couldn't afford rent somewhere else). at some point before he left he stole some hot pockets and went home. nobody knew he took them. he gets home and starts eating them and his mother questions where he got them. she finds out what happened and tells him to go back to the store and confess. again the following is all alledged and none of it has been proven. he goes back and tells the manager on duty that he stole the hot pockets when he left earlier that day. the manager decided to discipline him somehow with a write up or even possibly termination. they then get into an argument about how he was "doing the right thing" and shouldnt be punished, but the manager had a different opinion being that since he confessed to stealing how would they know if he would do it again and just not confess. so things get very heated and the guy starts knocking over displays of products (again, allegedly) and he is told to calm down and he refuses. (and hey, if i was going to get fired i'd be pretty pissed too...not to this extent obviously, but whatever.) police are called. police arrive and see him throwing cans of vegetables in the manager's direction and he is screaming. they try to get him to calm down and he won't. he begins to approach the officers in a non-subdued kind of way and they taser him.
it's sad that he's dead...but what were they supposed to do? supposedly they tasered him three or four times, which i'm sure is excessive

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Three bags of marijuana were found in the sock of a teenager who died after he was hit with a police officer’s Taser, according to a search warrant.
Darryl Wayne Turner, 17, was killed at the Charlotte Food Lion store where he worked. Officers say he was arguing with his manager when police arrived and used the Taser to subdue him.
There’s still no word on whether there was marijuana in Turner’s system or whether it may have contributed to his death

I'm going for a second opinion.
Nope. The reporter, who also is certainly not a doctor, speculates that the marijuana DID contribute to his death. Since his speculation is far more scary, I'm going to go with his opinion.

I think the article is implying his judgment may have been impaired when the confrontation happened. Which still doesn't make much of a difference as far as whether the cops were right to tase him, but would explain why it happened in the first place.

People stoned on marijuana are notoriously confrontational. They're always starting shit. Shit like Hot Pockets.

Well I'm glad they found this out. This justifies everything.

my understanding was that tasers are a substitute for lethal force- i.e. use only in a situation where you otherwise would use a gun, so you don't have to kill somebody. now, in this situation, if that cop didn't have a taser, would he have shot this kid instead? i'm thinking not.
