We've heard before that city X is a baseball town, city Y is a football town, and so forth. I thought I'd put this question to the masses and see what the results are.
Even before Boise State really emerged, football has always dominated here. Everyone is always eager to talk about last weekend's results, college or pro--whereas no one else could really a shit about the other sports.

College Football without question.. They live breathe eat and sleep it in the south.... not just Atlanta so because of the melting pot of people from all over, we talk about everything and every conference not to mention the great amout of HS players that play all over.
Add HS football for Recruiting and Pro football to watch thier former players move on to the pros.
We could essentially break down every aspect of College Football down to the Linebacker coaches and people would have interest.
Pro is only not as big because the Falcons have generally sucked miserably for the majority of thier existance.... however, this year... I may be a season ticket holder for the first time.

Phoenix is a weird dynamic because of the transplants. I think it's truely a football town but since the Cards have sucked since day one, it has yet to happen. Even though the D-backs are good again, people still seem a bit indifferent. The Suns and ASU football pretty rule right now.

although it might be hockey right now, but overall its football
Don't kid yourself, the vast majority of people in Philly don't care about hockey.
It's NFL football, it will always be NFL football.
The rest looks like this IMO:
MLB NCAA Hoops NHL NBA NCAA Football
lol, its the playoffs boss. the flyers have been all over tv for weeks. i guess the wiggers in the area dont like hockey, but its pretty much the biggest sports story in town

Right now? maybe. Of course people will bandwagon it up while they are in the playoffs and doing well. Doesn't mean people care more about the Flyers than the Phillies or Eagles. I don't know what the wiggers in the area like since I don't associate myself with them. I do know that the majority of white trash love the Flyers, and I am around a ton of white trash in NE Philly.

Wait, you're telling me that Philly doesn't get fired up over the Temple football program?!
hahahahah, no. Philly is a PSU town for college football but it's just not all that big here. The Eagles rule the town from training camp until the end of the season.

Chicago is, and always will be, a Bears town. The baseball teams seem to polarize the city's fan base, and the hockey team is virtually non-existent. The Bulls, despite their success in the 90's, were still second-fiddle to the Bears during that time.
If I were to rank the popularity of the city's sports teams in order now, it would probably go something like this:

yup, MLB is huge right now in NY. The Yankees and Mets are doing insane attendance numbers...and dominate the local sports media year round. Football is always football around here...it never really increases or decreases in popularity, it's just always popular. Layden/Isiah have pretty much killed pro hoops around here....and none none of the local college teams have been doing much, although in the early to mid 90's the Knicks owned this town and likely will again if they ever get good.
There's really no local interest in college football...unless you want to count Rutgers. Although there's so many people in NYC from the big schools that the bars are always packed every Saturday afternoon in the fall.
