LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Saturday Night Live" veteran Jimmy Fallon has sealed a deal to succeed "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien on NBC in 2009, sources said.
O'Brien, whose show airs at 12:35 a.m., is moving to Los Angeles next year to replace Jay Leno at "The Tonight Show," which airs an hour earlier.
NBC is expected to make the announcement on May 12 during its "upfront" presentation to advertisers in New York. The network declined comment on Thursday.
Fallon, 33, co-starred on "SNL" for six seasons, and co-hosted its "Weekend Update" segment. He left the show to focus on making features, although such efforts as "Fever Pitch" and "Taxi" fell flat at the box office.
Fallon's new gig as "Late Night" host stems from a development deal he signed with NBC in early 2007. He will probably stay at O'Brien's Studio 6A at New York's 30 Rock, although details have not been confirmed.
The move further cements NBC's late-night transition, which is making Leno a highly sought-after free agent. ABC and Fox are reportedly circling the top-rated comic, while NBC is trying to keep him in the company fold with a new show.

Im not a huge fallon fan, but sometimes things work out. He seems like a guy who doesnt take himself to seriously, and should have fun with it.
well if you want to talk about a resume of sorts, the simpsons episodes that conan worked on were funny. i have never seen anything remotely funny that jimmy fallon has done. granted, SNL as a whole sucked and you after will ferrel left and you can't hang that on his shoulders, but still

But I think there's a huge difference between someone like Conan when he started and someone like Fallon. With Conan, he was an unknown. Sure, he was a writer on SNL and producer for the Simpsons, but not a whole lot of people knew of him, so they had no preconceptions about him and tuned in to draw their own conclusions. With Fallon, people know him, and he seems very polarizing. People know him from SNL and the two-bit movies in which he starred after. Those that don't care for him won't give him the benefit of the doubt and won't even bother tuning in, regardless of how good or bad he actually turns out to be. So there will be a huge segment of potential viewers that will never watch.

conan was the valedictorian of his graduating class at harvard, as well as the only person to serve as the editor of the humor/lampooning newspaper for two years in a row. I think in the biz, he had a reputation which got him a lot of those gigs....
Jimmy Fallon taking over for Conan-- I'm VERY excited. Good music will come through his show, and I suspect his recent absence from the limelight was calculated to put a little distance b/t this new incarnation of his public life and the previous one...
As for the yappers complaining about his "laughing," I LOVED that the dude was having so much fun on the set and enjoyed getting to work with such a great troupe of guys that sometimes their comedy forced him to breach the 4th window and laugh like he was just an audience member. same thing someone said about MMJ's new album- you can tell they are having fun and it's infectious.
That said, I'm going to very interested to watch how Fallon assumes the role of Interviewer; that is a third of the job if not less and I'm curious how he will pull off showing/expressing his interest in whomever is his guest. Hopefully they can load up his first month with people he'd want to be interviewing anyways to help him transition into dealing with guests that you either outright don't like/respect or just don't dig what they are into...
also, how he handles the monologues/opening, I'm going to be very interested in the type of material he does. Lettermans my VERY trusted grandfather, Conan a cool/funny guy I wish I was friends with, and Fallon??? I'm curious what personality types he'll assume
also, is Conan having to move out to LA for his promotion, or will he stay in NY??
