My mantra on "beliefs":
"You can believe whatever you want so long as you don't go trying to mess with what I believe. Fair enough?"
that has nothing to do with whether or not you respect a person's beliefs.

Certainly it does!
Different strokes for different folks, ceebs. Plain and simple.
If you want to force a belief system on me that I just don't believe in, I guess that would be kind of disrespectful on your end. Likewise, if I forced a belief system on you that you won't subscribe to then that would be disrespectful of me.
In order for respect to be successful, it MUST be a two way street.
I don't have to agree with your belief in order to have respect for you as a human being. And vice versa.
For me, "respect" equates to civility.

my latin teacher senior year made an interesting point to us. it's been awhile since high school so this is a paraphrase, but she had us learning about the roman gods and goddesses and some smart ass was bitching day in and day out about how ludicrous it was that we had to learn about fictional characters that represented different parts of nature as well as human emotion/etc and he kept criticizing how stupid the romans and greeks must have been to believe in all of that. and she said something along the lines of "well i'm sure most of you believe that a magical man was nailed to a cross and ascended into heaven so that your sins could be absolved, don't you? is THAT ludicrous? isn't that a little bit silly to believe in a fiery place in the center of the earth where bad people go when they die?" and no, she was not fired.
i'm not sure what this has to do with this topic other than i guess most people respect their own beliefs as and SOME of other people's beliefs as long as they don't seem too "weird"

I don't respect religious beliefs. However, I do respect certain moral beliefs. And a personal belief of mine is that one does not need religion to dictate morality.

I'm not even going to bring 'religion' or ''spiritual' beliefs into this thread because there's a number of threads that deal with this already.
I guess I look at it this way:
Some ppl will believe that it's smarter to save their money paycheck by paycheck to accrue enough to live on when they reach retirement age. And others believe that they should risk a percentage paycheck by paycheck to invest in a retirement fund that is contingent on the markets. Which is the smarter choice given the fact that no single human being can predict the future in absolute certainty, not withstanding all the pros and cons with either option?

I dig it.
And when someone is uncivil towards you or others for belief A,B, or C, unless there is a judicial system set up to mediate between opposing forces, then it should be understood that when one's survival and livelihood is being threatened any force necessary to ensure survival should be respected as well.

I don't believe that it is true that respecting an individual equates with respecting that individual's beliefs. Civility allows us to respect individuals and coexist peacefully, but few people respect belief systems that are in opposition to their own. It is a rare and charismatic individual who can effect changes in people's core beliefs, either through the sheer power of their intellect or the cult of personality.

I can respect that people have different beliefs systems than mine. And I can respect them enough enough not to try to change their belief system. I can respect them enough to not be purposefully offensive to their beliefs. But I probably don't respect their beliefs in total but I'm quite sure there are admirable parts to just about any individual's belief system.

That's not what the bible wants you to do.
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit" - Matthew 28:19
Maybe I let my actions speak for themselves? The two big things expected of me are to love God and love my neighbour. I think I have some leeway in interpretting scripture as long as I adhere to the big two. I'm sure being happy, generous and open to questions will have more of a positive impact than getting all c11 on anyone.
