Pearl Jam have begun work on early demos for their ninth studio album — which will be their first with producer Brendan O’Brien since 1998’s Yield, according to guitarist Mike McCready. “It’s really in its infant stages right now,” McCready tells Rolling Stone. “We have about five ideas that have been worked on.” The band, whose last album was 2006’s well-received Pearl Jam, isn’t sure yet about the direction of the new release. “Brendan is another set of ears that we respect, and he’s going to give us a different way to go but I don’t know what that is yet,” McCready says. The band has already had one session with O’Brien, and will probably resume work on the album in July after finishing their June U.S. tour. (Also in July, the band is planning to appear on VH1’s Rock Honors special, which will honor PJ faves the Who.)

Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready revealed to the BJ Shea Morning Experience on Active Rock KISW/Seattle yesterday that the band has begun work on the follow-up to 2006's self-titled album. McCready said, "We are working on a new record right now, so we are in the process of writing a bunch of new songs, and we have our producer Brendan O'Brien - who worked on some of our earlier records - Vs. and Vitalogy. He is back with us right now so we are working on songs with him. We will try to do a record sometime this year, but that's about all we got. We've got about four or five tunes ready to go right now. They are just in the early phases." McCready wouldn't commit to when we'd hear a new Pearl Jam record, just that "We won't give you a Chinese Democracy."

Should this thread be changed to Something Concrete Right Now?
I still don't know what to think if it. I hope they have songs rather than ideas for the July's sessions. He even went from 5 to 4 maybe 5, so i guess they're ready to drop one of the "ideas" already.

He said 5 ideas...but with 4 or 5 ready to go, so i'd take it to mean they have sketches of 5 songs. There's definitely the chance of a couple being played on the tour.

5 ideas is a way of saying we are working on five 'almost complete' songs, they probably have tons of riffs, chords and ideas not worth mentioning in an interview.
I would guess that they finish those ideas in July record 5 new ideas, and/or record some avocado leftovers and we could have a new PJ disc this autumn!

I was deducing from Mike's words: "We've got about four or five tunes ready to go right now"

thumbs up indeed. everything in that article was good (and/or old) news. i hope that mister O'Brien will bring a bit of air in the mix. avocado's sound is a failed attempt at too much compression. some arrangement and mixing choices on their last 3 albums i just can't swallow. some bits of songs sound full of compromises - you can almost who went head to head at the mixing desk. BO'B managed to bring the best out of PJ in a non-linear yet forward-looking, troubled time for the band. They grew up a lot together, sonically. count me in the "looking forward to this" marathon

They can potentially make the best record of their career at this stage. The most optimistic sentence from Mike is "he's another set of ears we trust" because "ears" didn't seem to be one of the criteria for the last 3 albums. I mean all the 3 have some really great songs on them but there are so many others that are totally superfluous.
