With how many northeastern PJ fans there are, especially Philly, I don't know how there's not a Phillies thread yet.
But hot damn, Pat Burrell!!! 2 run walk-off homerun on a 3-2 count, down to your last strike, gotta love it.
Though I must say, I'm kinda pissed about seeing fans holding up signs welcoming back Aaron Rowand. Well Rowand can suck my fuckin ass. Hey don't get me wrong, I don't fault a player for thinking about money. Problem is this asshole's decision was 100% ABOUT MONEY. I want him to look me in the eye and with a straight face, tell me that deep down in the bottom of his heart he believes that the 2008 Giants have a better chance of making it to the World Series than the 2008 Phillies. And if he does believe that, get the men in the white suits ready for his departure. You're supposed to be all about winning, and that's most important? Well apparently not. I hope your millions buys lots of big screen TVs and island vacations, because you're sure as hell never gonna be playing baseball in October.

money's kind of important too. professional athletes aren't guaranteed any amount of time in the leagues and they need to make their money before it's over. as long as he's happy playing in san francisco i don't see why you should care.

Believe me I understand the desire for security. But it's not like the Phillies didn't make him any kind of offer, I'm pretty sure they offered him 3 years at at least $10M per, so that's pretty damn good money (especially for a career sub-.300 hitter who had BY FAR his best year). And so, for as much about "the game" and absolutely wanting to win that he's supposed to be all about in his approach, it's kinda hard to take that seriously when he opts to sign with a team who plenty of experts are predicting might very well have the worst offense of the last 50 years. So I think there's a balance there that can be had, and he went WAY more for the money side than I ever dreamed he would. He's clearly far more concerned about cashing in than he is about getting to another championship. It's hypocritical.

3 years, $30 million versus 5 years, $60 million. which would you take? for all he knows, this is the last time he'll get a decent contract offer. 3 years leaves him at a terrible age to be looking for a decent amount of money and comfort.

I know there's hardly a point in me answering because you'll probably say that you think I'm full of shit for answering this way (particularly without having been in such a situation directly myself), but I'd like to believe that I'd take the 3/30 deal. It still gets me a good chunk, I'm already in a city that absolutely adores me and is practically ready to build a statue in my honor, and any fan with half a brain could tell that my chances of getting back to the playoffs are exponentially greater here than with San Francisco. At the end of the 3 years, as long as Rowand plays the way he's expected to given this other contract that really did happen, he should have little problem in securing another contract of 3 years at the very least of $5M per (and he might very well have another WS ring on his finger by then).
But for the real games, yes Myers was very encouraging tonight. I still can't believe Rudy Seanz(sp?), it feels like this guy came completely outta nowhere and he's been a total stud for us. Ryan Howard on the other hand -- SIT THE FUCK DOWN. Yep, you're showing all of us idiots why you deserved the biggest arbitration win in history There was absolutely no doubt in my mind that he was gonna strike out in that 9th inning at-bat.

The Phils offered Rowand 3 years 39 million. Giants offered him 5 years 60 million. That's 13 mil/yr from the phils and 12 mil/yr from the giants. Rowand wanted a longer term deal, so he went wif da giants.

how does moving across the country remedy that situation?
he's also from arizona and is more partial to the west coast. (i've hung out with the guy a few times).
the phils had plenty of opportunity to get this done in 2006-07. they didn't. the didn't want to pay him to hang around w/ a 5-year deal, they think he's injury-prone and wanted victorino to have the job anyway.
the giants overpaid to get him, that's their fault.
but the one thing that pisses me off about moron fans is money, and taking the hometown discount or whatever. you find a job that will pay you double, you take it, simple as that. doesn't matter if it's $10 an hour or $10 million a year. that money takes care of his kids, and their kids.
you take a job leaving $20 to $30 million on the table. do it and you're a jackass.
but the phils sure are kicking ass, huh? been down to 6 games already.

So how long is it gonna take for Manuel to move Howard down in the batting order? He was up on two occasions last night with men on and 2 out, and managed to strike out both times.

Well for one, this isn't the situation of just a typical "job" we're talking about here, and second, I'm not gonna spell out my argument yet another time to explain why it isn't.

Hmm.. I hadn't heard anything like that, but I doubt that'd happen. But boy, to have two consecutive days be any better of a commentary on this pitching staff, to go from Myers to Hamels.
Keep in mind (for what it's worth) Myers being designated as the so called "ace", getting the Opening Day nod this year, I gotta think that had more to do with simple seniority than anything else. Anyone could tell that Hamels is the better all around guy, but giving the ball to Myers then was just more about respect. However you can be damn sure if he's still getting knocked around thru July, Charlie will rearrange the rotation after the All Star break (like I believe he did last year as well).
Anybody happen to check out Chris Coste's book yet?
