User control panel > board preferences > tick "No" at "Notify me on new private messages:"

you probably (accidentally) subscribed to a forum, you can "Unsubscribe Forum" on the top of whatever forum you subscribed too. same with topics in case you just subscribed to a topic.

if it happens again do the same and then go here:
ucp.php?i=prefs&mode=post

set the last option to "No"
