He makes a reference to someone named Diane before Light Years at Pinkpop 2000 and that they never got to say goodbye to her. I was just curious as to who this Diane person was.

Ed dedicates 'Light Years' to Diane Muus from Sony Music. (She died in 1997 at an age of 33 and knew the band very well.) "So that was about a friend who is fucking up and there is nothing you can do about it! And you just watch'em go down down down. And then, other times you have got friends that don't fuck up at all and are great people. And then you just lose them for some reason. They are off the planet and you never had a chance to say goodbye. I only mention this because there was a person we used to know here and that was Diane and ah, we never got a chance to say goodbye. This is goodbye!"

Yes, she was their promotion person at the Dutch office of Sony in Hilversum. I once met her and she was very nice. She told me they all stayed at her house during the first tour, and she taught Dave Abbruzzese to say 'pindakaas'. I got a couple of Black cd-singles for me and my friends and some more promotion material when I visited. I also saw her at a concert once in Amsterdam but then we only said hello, and I was with my friends and she was partying with other people, probably music business people. One of the last nice and dedicated people there... After her, they had different contact persons every couple of months so I totally lost touch. After the concert in Prague in 2000 I asked Eddie Vedder about Light Years and who they wrote it for. That was for someone else but the dedication at Pinkpop was for Diane.
groetjes, Mirella

I lovelovelove that performance of Light Years. Can you imagine if someone wrote a song like that for you?
Not really...I'd be dead.
hehe, i realised this as i was typing it and was going to add it on the end of my post...but I thought it would ruin the moment and that sentiment would prevail.

I believe that he wrote the song for his great-aunt. His grandmother's sister. She took care of him when he was a baby. He talked about her in his House of Blues show with C Average, when they opened for the Who. She died in 1999.
