S. Darko takes place in 1995, seven years after the original film. It follows Donnie Darko's younger sister, Samantha, who, in the wake of his death, has found herself at age 17 with a broken family, mired in feelings of insignificance. When she and her best friend Corey are plagued by bizarre visions, they set off on a road trip to Los Angeles.

The project was announced to the public on May 9, 2008. Daveigh Chase will reprise her role from the original, now the titular character. Also joining the cast are Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl), Briana Evigan (Step Up) and Justin Chatwin (The Chumscrubber).

Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly is not involved with the film in any capacity, but when asked about his taking over the helm of the film series, the sequel's director Fisher stated: "I am a great admirer of Richard Kelly's film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality." Fox has already bought the North American distribution rights.

Shooting begins May 18, 2008.

Donnie Darko wasn't that good to begin with.

it was alright until he saw the guy in the bunny suit. a literal ACTOR in a cheap ass fucking bunny suit. "oh wow he sees a live talking bunny that tells him shit"

plus, if they were going to use mad world by tears for fears they should have used that one. now every "cool" kid knows the cover of the song...but not the original

I'm not sure what the copyright issue is exactly with doing a sequel featuring supporting characters (but not the main) from an original, if he'd of had to get some rights from Kelly or not. And if he did, that Kelly would actually allow it.

I would say the chances are extremely likely that a sequel being done by an entirely new writer/director to a niche film like this of being good are very slim.

I like the original, mind you, I don't think it's the cultural touchstone that some folks younger than me seem to think it is, but it's still solid and the part with Mad World is one of the biggest emotional punches in the whole thing for me. Cover or no, it's pretty hard to deny that it's good use of music in a film.

Donnie Darko also suffers from heresay hype that will not most likely not be met. luckily, i saw the movie before it got any kind of buzz, so i didn't have any expectations (regardless of what LV says). if i had heard about before, i probably wouldn't have liked as much
