George makes a huge sacrifice and gives up golf. Wow, George. Thanks so much. Don't bother to help provide better health coverage for the Veterans hospitals, don't give them a gameplan to win the war. But definitely wear a flag pin on your coat and give up golf. I think the troops and the american public will totally side with you.

“I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf,” he said. “I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal.”
Bush said he made that decision after the August 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, which killed Sergio Vieira de Mello, the top U.N. official in Iraq and the organization’s high commissioner for human rights.
“I remember when de Mello, who was at the U.N., got killed in Baghdad as a result of these murderers taking this good man's life,” he said. “I was playing golf — I think I was in central Texas — and they pulled me off the golf course and I said, ‘It's just not worth it anymore to do.’"

honestly, would any of you be happy if you caught bush playing golf on memorial day? i am not a bush fan by any means, but sometimes i think that people sincerely hate him and nothing he can ever do will make a bit of difference.
giving up golf is not going to solve anything, but it's nothing to jump all over him for either.
jesus, i can't believe i just defended that charlatan.

he should have given up playing golf, yes. he should not have told anyone about it unless asked, though. i'm not sure how this came up in the interview.

even so, imagine this exchange.
reporter: so, many people have sacrificed during this war. thousands of lives have been lost, families torn apart. what have you sacrificed? (he could say here he hasn't slept at night thinking about the atrocities, or that he's having health issues due to stress -- just about anything). bush: well, i've given up golf. i don't think it's right for parents of dead soldiers to see me on the golf course.

It just comes across as so shallow. "I sent all these kids to fight an uneccessary war, so i gave up golf."
Blech.
He didn't give up his daily mountain bike rides with the secret service and select members of the press. He didn't give up all his vacations to his ranch. He gave up golf.
He didn't give up fun. I wouldn't expect him to. It's just the comparison of sacrificing golf to the sacrifice that soldiers make that nauseating.

okay, he should have not mentioned it unless asked. of course by that reasoning hypothetically there are things that he is sacrificing/thinking/doing that he does not mention to reporters.
i don't see this thread as anything but an opportunity to bush bash for the sake of bush bashing. i've done it with the best of 'em for almost 8 years, but it's getting old. his policies are ripe for attacking, sure. but let's leave it at that.
