i figured it was time for a change.

Quote:
Clear and Present Danger is a 1994 film directed by Phillip Noyce, based on the book of the same name by Tom Clancy.

As in the novel, Jack Ryan is appointed Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Acting Deputy Director and discovers that he is being kept in the dark by colleagues who are conducting a covert war against drug lords in Colombia.

This is a quality flick and I wish the same crew had stayed on for The Sum of All Fears and the forthcoming Cardinal of the Kremlin. They had a good thing going with Patriot Games and C&PD.

Clancy was, while he was still writing, my favorite author, but he seems to have dropped off the face of the Earth after his last book turned out to be a shitbomb. I can only hope for quality Clancy film adaptations in the future. They haven't been Oscar-winners, by any means, but they're quality.

There is so much more going on in the book than in this movie it's not even funny, you couldn't even call the movie cliff notes.

Jack Ryan: I'm here to rent the Huey.
Helicopter owner: We don't rent it anymore, but it is for sale.
Jack Ryan: How much?
Helicopter owner: Two million dollars.
Jack Ryan: Uh, my pilot and I will have to take it for a test drive.
Helicopter owner: Of course, you just have to leave a deposit.
Jack Ryan: How much is that?
Helicopter owner: Two million dollars.
Jack Ryan: Umm...
[Shows a CIA business card]
Jack Ryan: Would you take a company check?

The President: You'll take the blame. Cutter and Ritter will take some too, but it won't amount to much. They'll get a slap on the wrist and $20,000 an hour on the lecture circuit. The rest, you'll dump on Greer. Yes, you'll take him down with you. You'll *destroy* his reputation. But it won't go any further than that. It's the ol' Potomac two-step, Jack.
Jack Ryan: I'm sorry, Mr. President, I don't dance.

Whats up with the chronology in the "Sum of all Fears"? How did Jack Ryan suddenly become younger and merely be engaged when the film took place after the other ones?

It was a franchise reboot b/c Ford didn't like the script and bailed.

A buddy and I saw this movie in the theatre baked out of our minds. We still spit out lines whenever we see each other. It still holds up well and i seem to watch it whenever it's on TV. Not a classic but still great

And I'm pretty sure I was reading somewhere a couple weeks ago that there's another Clancy adaptation going around, but where the idea is to "reboot" even further, that is have Ryan be even younger than he was in SOAF, and of course recasting the lead again.

I wonder if I'm in the minority of feeling still that "Hunt For Red October" is my favorite Clancy flick.

Cardinal of the Kremlin and Without Remorse are in development.

I like this and Patriot Games, loved both books as well. Also enjoyed The Hunt For Red October movie.

Sum of All Fears was shit (the movie anyway.)

I loved it when the Latin Jack Ryan showed up on 24 a few years ago.
