I was looking at some games today and two sprang to mind:

Tobal 2
Star Gladiator

Did anyone ever play these, or the first Tobal? I remember I read about them in game magazines and they seemed awesome, but they kind of fell off the face of the earth. Tobal 2 was never released in the US, but I remember an article saying it was one of the most amazing games ever.

Anyone? Feel free to add your own as well.

I also wanted to ask what the best PS1 games are. I'm going to buy a few really good ones from Amazon and do some retro gaming.

these aren't obscure, but the first two crash bandicoots were pretty good. also it goes without saying the final fantasies and metal gear solid.

I remember magazines talking about Tobal the first one, but I never actually played it

Lots of good games have been mentioned in this thread
I'll add Final Fantasy Tactics
and if you're into sports/racing games : Colin McRae Rally (I prefer the 1st one), Tony Hawk 2, Gran Turismo 2

similar, but not it. i think this game only had one level, that would just speed up the next round after you completed one round.
