His voice really sucks, but A for effort. The guitar is nice.
That's always been a big complaint about John Mayer, that he copped Dave Matthew's vocal style, but his cover sounds like it would've been a demo of the original song, before it was produced by Radiohead in the studio. If you have a great song, a cover can be pulled off with minimal instrumentation. When I heard the cover, it was like hearing the song for the very first time. I almost like it better than the version on Kid A.

I'm talking about his voice on its own merits (although I hate DMB as well), I just don't like it. The guitar does seem to have a nice effect on it though, maybe someone who plays can tell me what it is. Instrumentally, it's A+.

I don't like John Mayer's voice when he's playing his own music. Its terrible, but his delivery on this is great. There's this intense yet mellow feel to it. When he's singing the tail end of the word "ventriloquists" and the lyric "standing in the shadows at the end of my bed," I actually like him as a musician. Now if I shut this off and put on his own music... God help me.

I adore the studio version of Kid A, and even though I'm not a big John Mayer fan, his version of this song has been a mainstay in my music rotation for almost 5 years I think. LOVE it.
