This is great...

http://marketplace.publicradio.org/features/budget_hero/

"I thought you might enjoy creating your own plan for the federal budget. You can see how your choices on issues like the war in Iraq, health care reform, taxes and the environment play out in government spending. See if you can create a budget based on your values, without busting the federal bank.

When I played the game, I reduced the national debt to $5.1 Trillion by 2018. I kept the budget from going bust until 2070+. I also tried to earn these badges: Health + Wellness, Economic Stimulus, Energy Independence. I succeeded in getting 0 of 3."

I found it irritating that I could not eliminate all taxes and government spending at the same time. Zero debt. Zero taxes. Zero government.

Yeah, it wouldn't let you even touch Social Security or Medicare (or Military beyond the war part). And because of that, cutting taxes at all or even simply failing to increase taxes on the wealthy basically screws you.

Well, it isn't a horror-survival game.

Yeah man! Because people don't have any right to the money they earn! It is the goverments first! Or does it belong to you?

I do not understand why that would make the game awesome. Ya know, you got a tax cut too.

Apparently, many people prefer to have their money taken from them and largely wasted.

I'm all for epic tax cuts when they coincide with epic cuts in government spending.

So, I realise this is a stupidly basic question but to whom do you guys owe 37.7% of your GDP to? Thats like a lot of money. Is it normal for a country to be that much in debt?

Turns out that you are very very lucky that I'm not your president :haha:

Haha, I didn't get a chance to try this out yet, but I was going to do the same thing and had a feeling it wouldn't let me. Silly rabbits.

The problem is, this game doesn't allow for epic cuts in government spending.

LOL

If the federal government had to use the same accounting rules it forces American corporations to use, the debt would be >$59 trillion. Most of it is owed back to the American taxpayer's social security and medicare trust funds.
