Daniel Clement Dennett (born March 28, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts) is a prominent American philosopher whose research centers on philosophy of mind, philosophy of science and philosophy of biology, particularly as those fields relate to evolutionary biology and cognitive science. He is currently the Co-Director of the Center for Cognitive Studies and the Austin B. Fletcher Professor of Philosophy at Tufts University. Dennett is also a noted atheist and advocate of the Brights movement.
yes, we know: the brights movement is a tad ridiculous. but has anyone here ever read his stuff? i just found he's ...
going to be holding a discussion here in the city soon, though it's kinda not announced yet
and i'm wondering if i should delve into his stuff quickly.

He's an interesting author (in fact, the topic in which he works -philosophy of the mind- is really interesting), I've read some of his work for school some years ago. Let me check the names of the books in English and maybe I can tell you something to read...

i've got consciousness explained in my to-read pile but haven't made it there yet. i think i might read the VSI on consciousness first, actually.
VSI?

Very Short Introduction series, i think cord has talked them up before also, they have tons of them on various philosophical topics, i read one on postmodernism recently and just got ones on nietzsche and consciousness a few days ago. each about 100 pages long, small pages, really quick to read for an overview on whatever topic.

yeah, the one on postmodernism was good i thought, covered the basic elements of the movement at a high level, also delved into representative artists and writers. i like the format mostly because it's a quick way to absorb the basic ideas and they always have recommendations for more in depth reading.

i forget where and with whom i had a conversation about postmodernists recently ... but i remember thinking they have it all wrong. your view on the movement?

I identify with quite a few postmodern ideas, specifically the one that science and reason will not necessarily lead us to perfection. I look at nuclear physics, which was the culmination of incredible scientific breakthroughs, and it ultimately led to the atomic bomb. What do you have a problem with, c_b? I myself am no expert on postmodernism, experiencing it mostly through art and media rather than philosophy.

ok, so dennett's definitely coming to the new york society for ethical culture at 2 p.m. on saturday, may 31, for any of those interested. they're going to play his portion of the atheism tapes, then he's going to do a question-and-answer for about an hour.
here's the atheism tapes interview:
