Name an album and someone else who is a fan or knowledgeable will name a good track to get started with. I seem to have a lot of music that I start listening to but usually get side tracked and end up not listening to it. So if I can get some recommendations on what songs are strong on an album and then start from there and if I like it then I will give the album a proper listen.

Here are some to get started with:

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock & Roll
Belle and Sebastian - any album
Ben Harper - any album
Beulah
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl or Baby 81
British Sea Power - any album
Cold War Kids - Robbers and Cowards
Constantines- Shine a light
David Bowie - any album

Try and say a little bit about why you like the song you picked such as lyrics or great drums or what. thanks, more to come if this pans out, just trying to listen to some new songs, I've been in a funk of listening to the same stuff.

Feel free to ask about albums that you have yourself.

give me a break. You can't start a thread like this and then throw "any album" out there for four seperate bands. That's bullshit.

ANYWAYS

Destroyer - "It's Gonna Take An Airplane"

I don't know if I misunderstood his post or yours, but I think he was asking us to give the standout tracks from these artists/albums

The point was that I don't listen to any of these artists and wanted some input on what other people that do listen to their music think are the great songs to start with. I put any album because I have all their cds on my hard drive.

P.s. Please Bleed is an awesome song. I'm slowly working thru these. I'm not sold on Cold War Kids yet, but am warming up to them.

Edit: I guess the reason for this is I basically have dismissed these artists as being not my cup of tea but want to give them one more chance.

This happened a long time ago with the Mountain Goats, I hated them because I would start to listen to the Sunset Tree and I thought he sounded like Weird Al. Well, my friend loved them and we had similar tastes and I tried again and still nothing. Then someone recommended Attention all pickpockets and I was completely turned around by that song, so I got their cds and listened to them all and now they are one of my favorite bands. I'm hoping for a similar experience.

Agreed, was gonna make the same comment. But here's some.

The Hold Steady - "Stuck Between Stations"
The Replacements - "Left Of The Dial"
Sonic Youth - "Teenage Riot"
The Modern Lovers - "Roadrunner"
Pulp - "Common People"

Maybe the first post isn't clear but I'm asking which are the songs to listen to from those artists/albums.

The Hold Steady is another band I've tried listen to. I will try that song and give em another shot.

The Ben Harper stuff has been great, I'm getting into it.

Art Brut still is grating on me, I think its how they talk/sing their songs, kind of like the Hold Steady.

Haha. yeah. didn't see that either. Now I feel like a dick. proper answer to the thread:

Belle and Sebastian - any album: Even though it's a compilation, I think Push Barman To Open Old Wounds is the most comprehensive look at Belle & Sebastian that you're going to get. It's a double CD, though, so naturally a bit daunting. Start with the song "Lazy Line Painter Jane" or "Slow Graffiti" or "The State I Am In." If those don't get you, you don't like Belle & Sebastian.

British Sea Power - any album: I'm only a big fan of their first record, The Decline of British Sea Power. Open Season drags a bit and I think Do You Like Rock Music is a bit overstuffed. "Remember Me" and "Carrion" are good looks into what BSP are all about.

Constantines- Shine a light: Hmm. The first half of this record is pretty catching, I think. Maybe try "Young Lions" and "On To You" and work from there
