So as I'm driving back to work today from lunch, I see this couple (big black guy, probably in the 6-4 280 range, small mexican girl) arguing pretty heatedly on the sidewalk in the middle of a residential area near my house. They're right up in each other's faces, yelling and shit, and as I drive by, he starts choking her. So as I see this, I throw my truck in reverse, back up, roll the window down, ask him what the fuck did he think he was doing and tell him to stop choking this girl. He of course threatens to kick my ass and the girl starts saying that he wasn't hurting her, it was OK, etc. I drive down the road, call the cops, give them details, then turn around and go back. As I drive back by, a car pulls up and they jump in, along with a girl probably 5 or so years old :(. Dude sees me again, starts yelling, I flip him the bird and take note of the license plate.

I was really close to getting out of the car in both cases but stopped short because (a) I had no idea if this kid was packing or not and (b) the girl wouldn't even acknowledge that he was choking her. So I figured fuck it if she doesn't even want help then why should i get the shit kicked out of me or get shot trying to intervene? But then seeing the little girl get in the car with them has me thinking maybe I should have done something more.

Anybody have any thoughts? I needed someplace to tell the story and GD seemed as good as any.

Also, packing or not, you still would have likely had your as handed to you had you exited your vehicle. Self-preservation, man.

see i'm pretty much the same but i think having kids of my own has mellowed me some or at least made me more aware of dangerous situations. 10 years ago i would've been out of the car no question. and probably would've taken a good beating as a result - i mean, i can handle myself pretty well but this guy was pretty big, and seemed fucked up on something.

yeah, probably. if the girl had asked for help, i probably would've taken the chance. might've taken the jack handle under my seat for a little assistance, though. this was a large fellow.

You did a good thing. I on the other hand would have just mind my own business because I don't like getting into people's problems, that's just the type of person I am.

But hopefully that girl gets out of that shitty relationship though.

haha, this reminded me of an episode of cops in philly when they tried to arrest a naked dude on meth in a barber shop. driving away and calling the cops sounds even better after thinking about this

I remember that episode. That guy was nuts. Took at least half a dozen cops to take him out.

knowing he couldn't take on a group of men, he confused them with a bunch of gibberish in a different language, if i recall correctly. while they were trying to figure out what the hell he was saying, the woman had time to get away.

That's completely idiotic.

the story of jesus is more believable than this

Unless you're bigger than 6'4" 280lbs and really know how to fight (and potentially dodge bullets), then the best decision you made was staying in your car. ESPECIALLY considering you have a kid. You're no use to your kid if you're dead.

Other than that you did the right thing. No way the guy is gonna do anything crazy knowing there's a witness out there. Well, maybe not 'no way', but you probably lowered the chance. And just because the woman acted like he wasn't hurting her means nothing. She could just be really scared. Maybe they live together and she knows he can get to her anytime if she tries anything funny. Abused people tend to fear their abusers enough to defend them.

i had a hard time believing it myself, though the reason he told the story was actually to show how idiotic he was to act in that manner.

the story of jesus is more believable than this

was born of a virgin, was the son of god, was killed, then rose from the dead 3 days later, ascended to heaven, and will descend from heaven and return to earth any day now. yea, that sounds believable to me.

There is no way that happened.
