by position. and i'm not talking about his performance just this week, this month, or this season alone. i'm talking overall, the best player at each position. some tough calls to make here:

c: brian mccann (mauer? martin?)
1b: albert pujols (berkman?)
2b: chase utley
ss: hanley ramirez
3b: alex rodriguez (wright?)
lf: matt holliday
cf: grady sizemore
rf: vladimir guerrero
sp: johan santana (peavy? webb? beckett? hamels? lincecum?)
rp: no clue here. mariano rivera? jonathan papelbon?

i just wanted to make the thread after i saw tubbs' on basketball, so i'll leave some lifting to you.

martin's career OPS is about 40 points lower than mccann's. mccann's vorp is also 28, while martin's is 20.6

Vlad is pretty solidified at RF.

SP is tough. If its a "you have to win one game" kinda thing, I want Beckett. Best regular season, I'd probably take Brandon Webb right now.

Webb's sinker is disgusting. It would be a toss-up between him and Beckett right now.

uh ... you may not like them, but you forgot johan santana and jake peavy. peavy has about 200 more Ks in his career and 30 less walks than webb, while santana has roughly the same amount of walks as webb, but about 500 more Ks.

I'm indifferent to them. And yeah, that's a big oversight on my part.

Now that the Mariners have moved Ichiro back to right I'd take him over Vlad.

Ah I still thought they had him in center(haven't been following the AL West as much). Then it becomes debatable. Ichiro is a better defender and a slightly better hitter. But Vlad hits for more power.

This time 2 years ago, I'd take Santana. And it's not that he's really fallen much, I think its more about Webb rising. Peavy is sick too. I don't think you can really go wrong taking any of the 3.

ichiro is not a better hitter than vlad. vlad's got 150 points in OPS on ichiro, and the defensive differences have been minor.

santana and webb have been pretty similar pitchers so far this year, if we include last year, santana is better than webb over the past two years.

I think 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, RF are not even up for debate with the players CB said.

CF Sizemore or Upton

LF Holliday or Manny

C Martin

I would actually take every pitcher you listed over Santana.

RP K-Rod

A Rod is still a short stop and he's probably better there than Jeter, the only reason he's not playing SS is politics. I don't think he's as good at 3rd.

I'm basing it on right now which to me determines who the best overall player at the position is. Right now Vlad is facing a much steeper decline than Ichiro is. Right now I'd take Ichiro. His arm, while not freakish like Vlad's, is still very good. He can cover more ground in the field and is 30/32 in steals this season.

I'd still take Granderson over Sizemore.
