long time fan and 23 shows in with 3 more this week. I have a question that seems to be in the back of my mind after going to Camden 2...
Pearl Jam leaves the stage after there first set and the crowd slowly sits down. Now, i understand resting those feet you've been jumping around on for the first hour or so, but did we all forget what a REAL ENCORE is all about...Cheerining and demanding the band comes out to play a few more songs. It seems to me everyone has gotten way to accustomed with knowing that there will be two or more encores.
I state this to say if the crowds continue to RELAX and SIT and make NO noise that in some future shows the band with surprise us with a short show, not thinking we deserve more songs. they'll expand to a 20 or 22 song main set and a two song encore maybe and i don't want to see it.
23 shows in my lifetime and i cherish almost everyone, (take away a few in the early days especially the 98 tour when a few black-outs occured) but regarless i was cheering. SO LETS STAND UP AND GIVE A SCREAM..."ROCKIN' FUCKIN' ROLL and get some claps and chants going or something.
MSG 1 and 2 i'm expecting some rowdy fucking noise eventhough it's a tues. and wed. night and all i'm saying is for us NOT to take these encores for granted!
I bet lots of times they don't even pay attention to how much noise people are making when they're off stage. they're busy drinking and getting their shoulders rubbed. Don't worry man, they'll keep coming back out nomatter what.

i kind of agree and kind of disagree. I think there should be the cheering/stomping you want after the 1st "encore" to let them know the crowd is pumped and ready for more than just a ledbetter and a goodnight. At this point, standing and cheering after a 16-18 song main set is just a dog and pony show. [edit: i dont mean applauding after the last song, i mean the encore-inducing cheering long after they have left the stage] The band is taking a short break, they know it, we know, and they know that we know it ... i dont think they are sitting backstage gauging the crown noise. I'm inclined to take a break at that point too.

That first break is what amounts to the intermission. They are coming back out after that one...The length of second encore is perhaps "earned" maybe a little more by the crowd. Remember that by and large, Ed is the "anti-dick" or anti-rock star, the LAST thing he is going to be is sit back there and make the crowd scream for him to earn his presence! But in every two or more hour live performance of any kind, there is an intermission and the first break is the intermission.

Dude, I got a bulging disc in my L-5. Eat my anus. I am gonna sit after standing for over an hour.
You could also sit during "Even Flow".
That's reserved for
A) Piss break B) More Beer C) Even more beer.
If you leave early enough into the song, you could still get back about halfway through it and sit for about 2-3 minutes.
BTW, you joining in any of the MSG pre-show festivities?
I may be. It really depends what time I get in to the city from the LIRR. I am going to some bar that is straight down the road when u walk up out in front of MSG.
