I have been watching the Philly 05, the Buffalo 03 and the Pittsburgh 06 shows on DVD lately (I also went to all those shows)...The three most recent outdoor shows I have attended have been Camden 06 and 08 and Lolla last year. I may be in the minority with this opinion, but I have come to the conclusion that at the PJ shows since 2003- it is easier to capture and focus that insane energy at the indoor shows. You can feel the electricity banging from the rafters at the indoor shows, whereas the outdoor shows just to me lack that intensity or something. I cant put my finger on it- and I loved all four of the recent outdoor shows I have been to, (Lolla was one of probably 3 or 4 most memorable events of my life) - but I prefer the energy of the indoor shows.

I respectfully disagree.

I think the exceptions would be Gorge and Red Rocks (though I have never been to either). But the indoors are generally the hands down winners. Though I have some fond memories of a couple nights at Jones Beach (minus lame alcohol rules). Indoor venues are generally a better experience all around.
I think the Great Woods venue needs to be let go of. It is inconvenient from so many angles (public transport, curfew, location, etc.) And they could easily sell out the Boston Garden for as many nights. Plus you get rid of all the cowboy cops that salivate for these events out in Mansfield each year.
I really, really, wish they would put together a Fan Club only show at the Chevrolet Theater in Wallingford, CT. It has great acoustics and great seats throughout... indoors and you can get to it relatively easily from Boston and NYC (major fan hubs) you also have the train options. Though I'm sure there are similar and/or better venues elsewhere in the country that I am unaware of. But why can we not have a 10C only event? Is it impossible to rent these facilities for private functions?

indoor shows are more energetic. I used to like the outdoor venues because of the atmosphere, but recently there is just no comparison. The band brings it indoors and the electricity in th eroom is tangible.
Just based on the just completed tour, I was at Camden I and DC. Both great nights. However, it was hot as Fuck inside Verizon Center in DC, and the weather outside in Camden was just about as perfect as you can get. And for me, that really shaped the experience.
And though I've never seen them in the rain, that always seems to bring out the best of them as well.
Maybe it is because the first 5 or so times I saw them it was outdoors, but that would be my vote...

I like both for different reasons. I was at Camden I and II and MSG II this year and had a blast at all three places. MSG was shaking like a motherfucker but the laid back atmosphere in Camden was great (plus I think the setlists were better).
indoor venues are better than outdoor ones 99x out of a 100...and that goes for all bands.

I like the intensity of an indoor show. The heat is actually a part of it, but also the fact that the sound bottles up and can't escape, so the energy stays trapped the entire time.

I agree except for the heat part. I was very comfortable (temp wise) in Columbia and DC. I was dreading the Va Bch show due to the heat factor but the cool breeze and full moon was incredible and changed my opinion of outdoor shows.
I would still rather be in the nose bleed seats of a coliseum than in the lawn though.

The sound always seems better at outside venues....and the energy...anyone at either Mansfield show the last couple days can attest to that. Prior to those shows I thought Philly 05 or Buffalo 03 was the loudest I've ever heard at a concert...but Mansfield eclipsed it.
