Neil Young Adds “A Day in the Life” Cover to European Shows 6/30/08, 4:04 pm EST
A month after Paul McCartney performed “A Day in the Life” for the first time since the original studio recording 41 years ago, Neil Young has begun performing the Beatles song as the final encore on his summer European tour. Be warned, the version captured on YouTube is a super shakey, though the sound is quite listenable. Who do you think did it better?

Here's a better quality version (at least video wise, anyway):
awesome. really awesome stuff right there. this is why raw rock will always beat saccharine pop.

No, the real reason for Neil playing that song is not 25 June 1967, and not Sir Paul's concert, either. The real reason is The Archives. Neil has revisited the 1978 Rust Never Sleeps tour for the archives, where he played A Day In The Life over the PA during the shows. This must have triggered him to rehearse the song.
You can see hints of the archives in some of Neil's recent song choices. Do I Have To Come Right Out And Say It? on Bridge 18 in 2004 (Incidently a show where Paul played as well). A Man Needs A Maid, the '1976' version with synth, in 2007. The wide range of "Homegrown" material on that same 2007 tour (Separate Way, Love Is A Rose, Love/Art Blues, Try, Kansas, Mexico).
And now even Get Back To The Country, which I'm trying not to listen to before I've seen Neil this Friday!. Maybe we'll get some Trans or Everybody's Rockin' songs on this tour, mark my words!
So now you know where in teh Archives Neil has been working recently when he busts out a rarity.
