Well... I've got to say that PJ's version of Love, Reign O'er Me is better than the original by The Who.

I said it. It's out there now.
:)

Not sure if this makes sense, but watching that last night made me appreciate just how bare bones Pearl Jam live performances are. If their concerts had that same feel as last night it would suck (the back drop of rain falling, stage set up, etc).

That aside, they sounded absolutely awesome.

Ed DEFINETLY sounds unbelievable on Love Reign O'er Me...
Of course being Pearl Jam fans more than Who fans we'll like PJs version better, so that goes without saying, but as a Pearl Jam fan... there are very few songs, originals or covers, that Ed sounds THAT good on... it just fits his pipes.

But for me, the best part of the night, the best part of PJ playing who songs...

JEFF GOT TO PLAY A LIL AND YOU COULD HEAR HIM WOOHOOOOOOO

I will never understand why people go apeshit for the Who. I thought they sounded pretty damn mediocre.

Now Pearl Jam, thats another story. They play the Who better than the Who themselves.

YA know they are 60+ now mate 8)

Rogers voice has definetly gone done from his youthful days..... but he still sings with alot of passion...

we can only hope PJ is still playing in 2030 with as much fire as the Who still plays with today.

Probably one of their best TV performances in some time. "Love" was amazing. Despite the camera love for Mike, it was great to see Stone rocking out.

I actually hope Pearl Jam retires within the next 5 years or so. They would cement their status as one of the all time rock legends by going out on a high note. I don't have any desire to watch Eddie Vedder sing "Evenflow" when he is 60.

I don't when he's 43, go figure :?

I had the same thought last night when The Who started performing.

The Real Me was phenomenal, but I think we've all heard PJ do Love Reign O'er Me better than that. Still damn good, but The Real Me KILLED.

As for the other performances, I thought the Flaming Lips' Tommy Medley was pretty awesome, Incubus was OK, Foo Fighters doing Young Man Blues (a Who cover, WTF?) was passable, but with that Supergrass kid, I had to turn it off. I liked Adam Sandler better than that, musically. Tenacious D was fine for what they are, and Sean Penn should really STFU because he's an embarrassment to people who agree with him.

Oh, and The Who... ugh. I love 'em, but pack it in boys, it's done. Looking at those guys play in comparison to Neil Young's recent performances in Europe is not pretty.

Not a fair comparison. Neil Young has never done a song that anyone could describe as a challeging vocally. There's no reason he couldn't sing Harvest Moon when he's 90. A 60 year old trying to sing a Who song is next to impossible. It's next to impossible for most 20 year olds too.

The Real Me has never been one of favorite Who songs and I was a little let down when I heard that it would one of Pearl Jam's songs. That said I was more impressed by that than LROM. I actually said "wow" afterwards.
Sadly I have to agree with your Who comments, at least judging by their set on the same show.

PJ's Love Reign is better than the original? You're kidding right? PJ's version is one of the worst covers I've ever heard of any band.

Also, saying that the Who needs to call it a day?? Excuse me, but the Who are kicking ass with high energy shows even after 45 years. The Rolling Stones have been a band just as long and their band members are literally decomposing.

RM, you've made a grown man cry.

Nope I'm not kidding. All respect to The Who, and I'm positive PJ wouldn't be PJ is The Who never existed, but PJ took what TW did and elevated it to the next level, IMHO.

Because once upon a time The Who werent a lame caricature of their former selves but instead one of the greatest rock bands ever. Yeah, if this show even came close to resembling what The Who once was, nobody wouldve cared.

Yeah - apparently he's saying PJ did a worse job on The Real Me than these guys...

WASP

and here's PJ's version to compare:

and here's The Who's version

and finally, Clay Aikin's "The Real Me"

PJ's Love Reign = Garbage. Doesn't come close to the energy of the original. Perhaps if they did this song in '98 when Eddie still had a voice it would be good.
PJ's Real Me = Possibly better than the Who's. I've never seen the band on fire like that before.
