Hey Folks, I've been thinking of making my own live compilation of CDs based on every song from all studio albums- Ten through Avocado. So for Ten as an example, I'd like to have the best versions of "Once" through "Release" then for Vs., it'll be "Go" through "Indifference". Obviously some songs have never been performed live so we can exclude those. You get the idea, right?

I have 51 shows on my iTunes right now, but I'll DLed more of those recommended shows to complete my project here.

Anyway, I really like to hear some ideas you guys and gals of what were some of the best live versions.

Its all about preference...
I could list 10 different versions of Porch that i love for many different reasons...
from the 94 Atlanta version thats so... in your face
to Saratoga 2000 with Voodoo Child licks played TWICE
Indiana 2003 with Ed's improved ending
2005 uummm Atlantic City? where the Crowd sang the intro, and there was one other from 2005 that i really loved but i forget what show off the top of my head.

so really, youll have to find the best version to fit your compilation...
with Pearl Jam, I tend to make them for each tour... just works better that way since i end up with way to many boots from each tour to listen too... and keeps the boots from getting used / getting scratched...

But I did put together a Sleater-Kinney compilation that has virtually ever original song played live. (and as a bonus all the songs they played with PJ are included) If anyones interested, Ill tell ya where to get it ;)

Yeah you're right, it depends on each person's favorable shows they enjoy the most.
I recently made an mp3 collection of 2000-06 compilation of about 120 songs. so I just got to get into some of the older stuff from the 90's more often.

I've got this on an MP3 CD in my car at the moment and I'm going through it again. There really are so many stellar versions on this compilation.

I do agree though that the fun thing about doing this type of thing for yourself is that it's so subjective. You could easily do an alternate GH compilation using different versions of every song and it would be just as awesome.

Have fun.

The thing I didnt like about the GH Comp. is the set orders...
and thats why really, for people who love doing this sort of thing,
its really best to just do your own in the end...

take disc 1 for example... Id have definetly put Jeremy, and State of Love and Trust on this disc, possibly moving the improvs to a different disc, Jeremy for sure, to include as much of 10 as possible. with a set of something like

Release
Wash
Alone
Once
Why Go
State of Love and Trust
Breath
Deep
Garden
Black
Jeremy
Alive
Even Flow
Just A Girl
Brother
Porch

But yeah, Ive made best of's for the 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006 tours, and Ive just got songs that i always put together

Corduroy, Given 2 Fly
Animal, Hail Hail
Thin Air, Light Years
Satans Bed, Blood
Immortality, Present Tense, LBC, Gone
and my new fav combo, State of Love and Trust, Sad, Save You, Life Wasted

the biggest thing for me is always order / flow... and I do tend to group the CD's in categories... fast, slow, bluesy, political...

my biggest suggestion, TAKE YOUR TIME, and BE PREPAIRED TO REBURN... to get it to your liking

You have to remember that the GH comp was done by first time played live.

yeah... I know...
thats what i mean by "best of live" compilations are really up to the creator.
I like to make mine flow in more of a "concert" flow..... on each disc... like a mini hour 20 min concert...

the GH Comp just didnt flow good for me...
I think I would have liked it more (and this isnt taking anything from the work that was put into it, again this is just on the topic of best of compilations and how its really up to the individual) I would have liked the GH more, if it was in this order, AND using the earliest known versions of each song... then putting together a 2nd compilation using the BEST soundboard/A+ sounding versions of each song, and, a BEST Audience (recorded from the fans) version... and with these doing more of a "set list" order...

Thats what I did with the Sleater-Kinney one I put together for the SK fans... a best of soundboard and a best of audience... every song they played live got included (except the a handful of covers) IF anyones interested in that, let me know, ill let you know where to find it.

Yeh, certainly these things are absolutely subjective, which is what makes them so cool. You do it totally for yourself and if anyone else likes it, well, that's just a bonus.

I could certainly change up heaps of the GH songs for other versions, and I understand the "flow" argument too, but man is that still an awesome piece of PJ fandom right there. A huge undertaking done really well.

Lowlight's compilations are a great example of that "mini-concert" idea, done by individual tours. Also great stuff.

Me, I'm just happy that the fans are out there so willing to put these compilations together, and that PJ (and the fans) continue to provide so much great quality source material.

I wish I had time to re-do the Green Habit Complilation. I found too many shows were listed multiple times (MSG and Zurich come to mind) and some songs that only had aud sources can now be upgraded as well as new songs (Hard To Imagine, Bee Girl, I believe in Miracles, Man of The Hour, Sad, The American In Me, All Night, Don't Gimme Lip, Black Red Yellow) not including Avocado. I wish I had the time on my hands to take care of this.

Many thanks to whomever spent their time compiling the original.

Me, I'm just happy that the fans are out there so willing to put these compilations together, and that PJ (and the fans) continue to provide so much great quality source material.

True story.

Someone should make a compilation of this 2008 tour. ;)

I'm sure lowlight79 is working on this as we speak...

?

Was this played live, or just played through speakers as the band took the stage?

Im sure Ill eventually make a best of 08 set...
but dont hold your breath, there will be 10 others up before i get to it...
I tend to take my sweat ass time and really plan out what I burn now-a-days
It took me about a lil over 1 Year to finally finish up the Sleater-Kinney 8 disc best of live set I put together... (course I was waiting on a few people going through tons of bootlegs trying to find the last few songs, a few of which remain MIA)

Thats really the key to making a good mix CD

plan out an idea for what you want to do
plan out an order

and be prepaired to waste a number of discs LOL
