So it's late saturday night, and I'm bored watching music videos on youtube like I usually do after the bars close. Cliff was unfucking real, and this video reminded me of that. Just keep repeating to yourself that he is playing a bass guitar even though it doesn't seem possible. If that bus crash didn't happen, I doubt Metallica would have become so mediocre in recent years. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

I think that is kind of my point. They don't sound like typical bass solos.

I like coca-cola, but sometimes, it tastes a whole lot better with Jack Daniels mixed in ya know? Food tastes better with some spice, beer tastes better with friends, etc. etc. etc. It's great music, impressive, and fucking rocks. Try not to be so strict about what bass solos are supposed to sound like.

I dunno man, playing a bass like it's a guitar isn't really adding any jack to your coke. It's more like adding half water in my opinon. I do like that he played finger style, though. More metallers need to do that.

Ah, ok, fair enough. I see where you are coming from, but his bass solos were a small part of why he was great. I love it when someone takes something and does something unexpected with it. Cliff took a bass guitar, smacked me across the face with it, and said....that lead guitar, and that lead singer are awsome and all, but check this the fuck out. He was the person that showed me that bass guitar is just as amazing a part of that band as the rest of them. Thats why he was great. In my opinion anyway.

Plus, it made me stay up all night listening to music and playing guitar.

He died way too young. He would have never let Metallica do something like Load or St. Anger either.

Haha! I like Newsted actually. His backing vocals/screams/growls were great. Hes was good while he was with them, and he got out just before the band became a borderline joke.

This is what I wonder about. Would the band have gone in the direction they did if he had lived on? Why wouldn't they have actually? I don't think Cliff was wrote many, or any, of their songs did he? Although, he would have looked mighty strange on stage with short hair.

he didn't get a lot of formal credit for the songs, but he did have great influence on the band's sound and on james & lars. lars stated in interviews that when he first came in, cliff is the one that taught them a lot about music in general and how to do arrangements, songwriting, etc.

Really? Thats pretty interesting, never heard that before. Not that it's surprising though.
