Just wondering how you guys go putting together a setlist?

I'm playing a gig in a week and I'm debuting some songs that you would call lighter in nature, joke songs/parodies - but i also want to have some "proper" songs in there.

How do i work this all out - it's giving me a headache :)

start off with something that will get the audience interested. It should be either one of your funny songs, or a good serious tune. make it something you feel would get attention, but don't make it your best song, save the best for last. Other than that, go based on how the songs contrast to each other. You dont want to be too mundane and do many songs of the same tempo in a row. Just feel it out, Play your setlist in order and record it (if possible) so you know what it will be like for the audience and make changes accordingly

when i make mixtapes i generally think of the people listening to it, and keep their attention. think of when people will get tired of slow songs, put a fast on in, ect...

Make a list of songs.

Go up.

Play what feels best.

i've heard that the seventh song was crucial when it comes to pacing a show but i've read about the contrary.

Thanks for the input everyone :)
I'm giving this a shot - it's an acoustic gig in a venue with about a 50 person capacity to give you the picture...

Bubble Toes [Jack Johnson] > Patience/Every Rose Has It's Thorn tag
Love You Till The Cows Come Home [original]
Please Forgive Me [David Gray]
This Heart Is Delayed [Original]
This Heart Attack [Faker] > You Give Love A Bad Name tag
There's No Transaction Fee On Love [original]
Smokers Outside The Hosptal Doors [Editors]
Little Green Man [original]
Porch [Pearl Jam]

Wish me luck :D
