DETROIT (AP)—Caleb Campbell will not get a chance to play for the Detroit Lions because of a change in military policy.
Campbell was a seventh-round draft pick for the Lions in April. At the time, Army policy would have allowed the West Point graduate to serve as a recruiter if he made the team.
But a subsequent Department of Defense policy has superseded the 2005 Army policy.
In a letter to Lions president Matt Millen dated Wednesday, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jonathan P. Liba wrote that Campbell has been ordered to give up professional football for “full-time traditional military duties.”
Liba wrote that 2nd Lt. Campbell may ask to be released from his active duty obligations in May 2010.
Liba said Campbell was allowed to enter the draft “in good faith.”

every preview mag ive flipped thru picks the rams dead last and makes shitty comments like "the gateway to the worst team in the west"
you know what? I dont expect the rams to go to the super bowl, but fuck these people picking them to be so horrible. they still have Bulger-Jackson-Holt, a hopefully healthy O-line, Chris Long and Leonard Little on the D ends, and Al Saunders is back running the offense like the GSOT years
Seattle has been pretenders for years and got worse, Arizona is always a joke, and Frisco is improved but still a long way away
the Rams have just as good a shot in the NFC west as any of them

AFC East: New England-no contest here AFC South: Jacksonville-split series with Indy, win it on a tiebreaker for best division record AFC West: San Diego-KC, Oakland still rebuilding, Denver improves, but not enough to overtake them. AFC North: Cleveland-The rest of the division looks average, Browns offense led by a strong O-line allows them to take it.
Wild Cards: Indianapolis, Denver
Others to watch: Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Tennessee
NFC East: Philadelphia-Dallas is more talented, but an easier schedule for the Eagles gives them a better record NFC South: Atlanta-Call me insane, but I'm sticking with the trend. NFC West: St. Louis-Hawks dominance ends, a healthy Bulger and Jackson take command NFC North: Minnesota-Terrific defense and ground game allows them to easily walk over the rest of the division
Wild Cards: Dallas, New York
Others to watch: New Orleans, Seattle, Green Bay

This is absolutely ridiculous for the Army to make this move now. I thought they were selling Campbell in the NFL as a way to promote good publicity. Well, they just shit all over that and tossed in some really bad pub on top of it.

I think the moral of all this that kids need to know is that once you make a commitment to the military, it is a commitment that lasts a LONG time. Not a decision to be taken lightly, although at times it seems like the Army wants it that way.

I would have had no problem if the Army had said from the get go, "Sorry son, you made your decision when you came to West Point." But don't go spouting this BS that he can get out if he makes a team. That's just stupid all around on their part.

Yeah I can't blame him though. He's easily the most important offensive weapon they have, and one of the most important on the team. He is severely underpaid.
